Influences
"We have many to give credit too in light of the influence their music has had upon us. But most of all, the experiences of life have influenced us and has led to the writing and performing of many of our songs. Hopefully, the following stories help to see how these every day experiences of life have given birth to much of our music."

"Lay In My Arms"

The song "Lay In My Arms" was written by Lisa a little over a year ago as a source of comfort for me. In August of 2007, I was diagnosed with Melanoma cancer and was told I could have six months, maybe five years, and maybe the doctors could prolong my life much longer. They explained the worst case scenario and left each of us in great turmoil. A few days later we were scheduled to play at the candlelight tour in Spring Mill State Park and we could hardly sing due to the stress we were under. One evening when I came home from work, Lisa told me to get my guitar and play for her new song. This was the song she wrote and I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. At this time, I have undergone surgery to have the melanoma removed and the doctors believe that all is well.

"How Many Biscuits"

"How Many Biscuits" is an old traditional song that has been recorded in many ways by various artists. My favorite recording of the song is that of Stringbean, one taken from this life in such a tragic and untimely manner. The Bulgur Mountain Band has changed the lyrics to fit a family tradition, that of biscuits covered with chocolate gravy. We hope you enjoy the song in the way and manner that we enjoy performing it.

"Ada Claire"

Ada Claire was written by Lisa while she was reading and studying about the civil war. Some of her ancestors fought in the war and as she read she was moved by stories of so many soldiers who left their wives never to see them alive again. The song is set in that period and is the story of a wife who lost her husband and of the plight of the poor soldier. The mood of the song truly depicts the era and Lisa's vocals are great (her loving husband's opinion). Ada Claire is the third track in the Pine Hill (Population 21)'s CD, The Land That Was.

"The Trail Where They Cried"

As Lisa worked on tracing her heritage, she found very quickly that she is a decendent of the proud Cherokee Indians. Reading of their plight at the hands of the white man led to this song. It is intended to convey the thoughts of the Indians as they were forced to leave from their land and they found themselves on the trail of tears. Literally translated, the thought is actually "The Trail Where They Cried." As you listen to the song, it is easy to imagine the scene before your eyes. This song rounds out the family CD under the name of Pine Hill (Population 21), The Land That Was.

"His Song"

The Bulgur Mountain Band is dedicated to the memory of Lisa's Grandpa "Bulgur" Lee Acton. He passed away a few years ago and left an empty void within her life. Music has helped to fill that void and Lisa's songs are of special comfort to her and her family. This song was written approximately two years after Grandpa "Bulgur" left this old world of sorrow. Though it is a very personal song for the family, it strikes a chord with all who have lost a loved one. "His Song" is also the tenth track in Pine Hill (Population 21)'s first CD, which should be available for purchase by January 19, 2009.

We hope to add more music periodically and hope that our friends will check back from time to time and listen in. Lisa is currently working on writing a series of songs dealing with the Civil War era. Ada Claire and To Watch and Wait are the first of these two songs. She has also finished another song of this era that we will soon upload to this site. It is our hopes to cut a CD in the near future of our regular music as well as one dedicated to the Civil War era. We hope you have enjoyed the music of The Bulgur Mountain Band!!!

Sounds Like
We make our music with strings and things, but our gospel is all a ccapella!

Wil Maring, a great singer songwriter who has been very successful in this field stated of Lisa in a message;

"thanks for the add. Your songs are very nice, pure and old time sounding, and it is great that the kids are getting this exposure to the music. they will be thankful for that later. keep in touch, thanks for liking my tunes, wil

Many people who have heard us play in live venues have stated that we have an old time sound, an appalachian sound. This is what we are striving to obtain and we are truly thankful for those who recognize this sound in our music! We are simply americana artists who do not fit the regular bluegrass nor country genre.

"The Bulgur Mountain Band"

The Bulgur Mountain Band is a family band who only recently took interest in playing music. We have been raised attending the churches of Christ, thus singing acappella comes natural to each of us. The family consists of Cecil & Lisa Smith, one son, Aubrey, and two daughters, Kaylee & Sophie. Cecil is originally from Brookhaven, MS, where he made his living for a few years repairing cars for Auto Care Center. The last twelve years he has been preaching throughout the country in gospel meetings. Due to preaching, they have lived in Milltown, IN, Marion, LA, and Orleans, IN, and have many friends and brethren throughout the country. Lisa grew up just North of Morrilton, AR. She married at the tender age of 18 in the year 1994 after meeting Cecil at a gospel meeting in Lebanon, MO. She has been a home-maker ever since, and enjoys her time with her children. She also is currently home schooling her children as well as playing and writing music. In 1996, Aubrey was born to this union in Louisville, KY. Following him two years later, Kaylee was also born in Louisville, KY. Two and one half years later, Sophie was born in Monroe, LA.

Their first venture into playing music was when Aubrey was given his first fiddle from his "pops" with the requirement that he was given lessons. After moving to Indiana a few years ago, he started learning to play under the oversight of Tim Key. Not long after he started, Tim told his parents that one of them also needed to start playing to help encourage Aubrey. About that time, Lisa's grandfather passed away, who had a tremendous impact upon her life. Her father came to visit looking for a new mandolin and they ventured over to Louisville to First Quality Music. She fell for an Eastman oval hole, purchased it and immediately began playing. A year or so later, back in First Quality Music, she purchased her Gibson which she loves dearly. Cecil wound up buying a Martin D16 and started working on learning how to play. Later, in a little store in Pickle's Gap Village, he found a John Hartford Deering banjo, and since has grown to enjoy playing the banjo, it being his instrument of choice. Tim set the family up for their first "gig" at the Lotus Dickey Festival in Paoli, IN, and they were on their way. Kaylee later started to play the guitar and all take turns in the singing department. Most of the music they play is written by Lisa (check out the following story about "Lay In My Arms) and they have had numerous opportunities to play in their area of Indiana.

The BULGUR MOUNTAIN BAND have also combined with other members of Lisa's family, the WHITE OAK MOUNTAIN RAMBLERS, under the name PINE HILL (POPULATION 21) and cut their first CD, "The Land That Was." It is a great CD filled with all original music that ties in with the family story. The Bulgur Mountain Band, White Oak Mountain Ramblers, and the Pine Hill (Population 21) hope you enjoy their music and ask that you will tell a friend to stop by for a look and listen.

Thanks for your kind words about my music. Actually, I havent had access to real recordings since I began working on banjo seriously about five years ago. All I have of banjo is a recording from a club that would record your set for you. And that was four years ago, though it still is pretty good. That was back when I only had one banjo, not the five that I own today. I will be going back to the place where I recorded before with my banjos and then you will hear something. Love your music btw.

Now in what state did the Monroe Brother's first perform musically:
not Kentucky, not Tennessee, Not North Carolina, but INDIANA!!!!
