A BRIEF HISTORY OF BUMBLEBEAR RECORDS:
bumbleBEAR records is the legacy of Bear Records (New York City 1987-1998). In 1998, Jimmy Hughes, Chris Bracco, and Ian Rickert began running the label with a new roster and a new name. In 2002 the label headquarters relocated to Athens Georgia and worked with a few Athens bands before taking a break. The label has been in hibernation for the past several years due to the above mentioned caretakers’ involvement in other musical projects and pastimes. However, between the years of 1999 and 2003, the reformed bumbleBEAR records managed to release 22 releases including several 7” records, many CDs, and even a Double CD, and now we’re waking up to help promote a few new projects that we hold very close to our hearts. The bands and friends we have worked with over the years have been amazing and many of their records are still in print if anyone is interested in our back-catalog.
BUMBLEBEAR WAKES UP:
Jump to the year 2008 and bumbleBEAR records has decided to wake up, announcing new releases and new bands on our roster. Basically, there are too many good bands in Athens (in our humble opinions) that have fans in Athens but don’t have that outward push getting their recorded music out of town to press, radio, and other media. bumbleBEAR wants to help with this. We are a band run label. The bands involved all help operate the label, and thus bring a basic DIY mentality to this no-budget bedroom label. We also don’t want to make listening or buying these records into a difficult decision for the curious listener. Therefore, the bumbleBEAR website has our new releases available for free download, so listening to the mp3s is cheap and easy. All tangible music media (historically bumbleBEAR has been a CD and vinyl label) will be kept to a limited or “as needed” pressing, and we intend to continue posting free downloads for new releases provided that the individual artist is in agreement with that aesthetic.
