‘…damn fine album of exceptional musicianship and contagious songwriting’
Rave Magazine, 25th August 2009.
For Brisbane based musician Burl Ivers, music is a way of life.
Having spent half of his natural life absorbed in playing, performing and recording, one could understand such a claim.
Such dedication has come to fruition this year with rave reviews of his independent debut solo album ‘portrait’, and subsequent East Coast tour in July of this year.
‘Portrait’ encapsulates Burls musical vision: a seamless mix of Roots, Soul, Funk & Jazz, topped of with classic 60/70’s song writing that may echo that of Jerry Garcia, The Beatles or Cat Stevens.
Having spent 10 years slogging on the Brisbane scene in various incarnations (ex Long Green Beans), Burl is relishing the opportunity of performing in solo mode, or with his backing band.
His live show consists of: soulful guitar slinging and singing, free improv, loops, banjo and melodica, within the framework of an eclectic set list to keep the punters on their toes!
Some highlights in Burl’s career include:
∗ Recent 1 album of the week on 4ZZZfm Brisbane
∗ Performing at Island Vibe festival where his tune ‘Surf Queen” made the compilation CD
∗ Resident gigs at Brisbane’s the Glass Bar and Lock N Load for over 2 years
∗ Performed on bills with stellar National artists such as Kafka, Dubmarine, Kooii, 8 Ball Aitken, Major Chord, Huckelberry Swedes, Chris Pickering, Tom Cooney and McKisko.
∗ Writing, arranging, and producing albums for Aussie soul-funksters The Long Green Beans
Burl regularly augments his solo show with other musicians, most recently teaming up with percussionist ace Ashley Farlow (Transbalkan Express, Schoolfight) and Trumpet/Bass Extraordinaire Chris Mckelliget (Alan Boyle & The Bleeding Hearts) to explore various world music rhythms and grooves within the confines of song.
Burl continues to be more prolific than ever, with plans of a new album early next year, along with a subsequent interstate and O.S tour schedule to be announced.
