Band MembersFEATURED VENUES:
HOOK, LINE, AND DRINKERS

In the fall of 2006, HOOK, LINE, & DRINKERS, a supposedly nice bar in Portage Lakes, booked the band ALONG FOR THE RIDE for a gig on Saturday, March 31, 2007. The gig was listed on the bar's website at www.hooklineanddrinkers.com/CurrentEvents.aspx The band prepared a lot of publicity, and started sending out emails the week before. On Tuesday, March 27th (4 days before the gig), the band received the following email:

FROM: "Terrie" (terrie@hooklineanddrinkers.com)
SUBJECT: RE: SAT MARCH 31: Along For The Ride at HOOK LINE & DRINKERS in PORTAGE LAKES!
DATE: Tue, 27 Mar 2007

Due to a double booking Hook line and drinkers will be unable to have you in this Saturday please give me a call to reschedule I apologize for any inconvience.

Terrie D
("General Manager" of
Hook, Line,& Drinkers)
===================

Terrie did not really want to discuss it on the phone, and as of yet has not replied to an email asking what other dates are available. The band does not believe this was a simple "double booking" since it was posted on the bar's website. Our opinion is that the bar just did not care to honor their contract because they wanted to give the Saturday night gig to another band that was the friend of the owner. If Terrie or anyone else from the bar wishes to respond, we will certainly post their reply here.

SUGGESTED ACTIONS YOU CAN TAKE:
  • If you are a musician considering booking a gig there, MAKE SURE YOU GET A CONTRACT SIGNED WITH A CANCELATION CLAUSE AND A DEPOSIT.
  • Write or call Hook, Line, and Drinkers, or email Terrie and ask her to explain her side of the story. If you feel that the band's story is true/accurate, let her know that you will boycott the bar until they have "satisfied" the band and BURNED has posted an "All Clear"
  • Become a "friend" of BURNED and publicize this site to your friends. The more friends we have, the more bar owners will respect the power of this site.

Note: When we have too many "Featured Venues" we will keep them listed in our blog. Please submit any venue that you would like featured in our comments section. Try to tell the whole story and all the facts. We will delete any postings that slander bars or individuals, but we will allow you to post all the facts related to an unfortuneate incident. Please be sure to include names, dates, phones, emails, etc.

This site is dedicated to creating a forum to help protect the northeast Ohio music community from unscrupulous elements who cause trouble for the rest of us. This includes highlighting venues or promoters who don't pay, cancel gigs at the last moment, or otherwise break their contracts or make life miserable for musicians AS WELL AS highlighting musicians who don't hold up their end of the deal.

Become our friend and use our comment section to post your story of when you or your band or your venue was burned. If you would rather stay anonymous, send us a message, and if we see any patterns, we will let everyone know.

We hope you never have the need to post here, but if you do, you know you will be helping the northeast Ohio music community.

NOTE: This comment is in reply to the one from THE HOUSE POPES below. It might make more sense if you read that one first.

We agree you completely. Verbal contracts work fine at most places. The purpose of this site is to help warn the music community of situations where a verbal contract might not be enough. When you encounter an "occasional exception" please share the details with the music community through this website! By the way, we do know of many local bands that only work with written contracts. BURNED will be posting some sample contracts in the blog. All the best to you!

Signed contract? How many clubs in this area actually offer contracts? In our experience it's usually a verbal agreement for a certain flat fee or (more often) a percentage of the door and/or bar revenue. In our experience it usually works well, although there are occasional exceptions.

NOTE: This comment is in reply to the one from MOTHERLOAD below. It might make more sense if you read that one first.

Since most of our bandmembers are from the north side of Akron, we haven't spent a lot of time at Hook, Line, and Drinkers. You might be correct about our music not fitting in, but the MP3s on our site are some originals, and the band had already decided NOT to play any originals at HLD. And I'm sure lots of patrons enjoy HLD, and lots of bands have had good experiences there. I bet Terrie is probably a really nice person, too. Maybe she was just doing what her boss told her to do.

But that is not really the point. HLD booked our band and posted it on their website. I think Vincent did the booking, not Terrie. Then we went through a lot of effort publicizing it, etc. Then they cancelled it 4 days before the gig. If this is untypical of them, then this will be no big deal. But if they do stuff like this frequently, then the local music community has a right to know.

I hope Motherload has a great year!

Regards,
Matt from Along For The Ride

I beg to differ some of the points made on this site and by one unfortunate booking at a local Akron bar. My band Motherload has never signed a contract and has had record sales every time we played at Hook, Line and Drinkers. I feel for those that felt shafted and ignored by Terrie from HLD, but we love Hook, Line and Drinkers and Terrie has always kept her word with us. We always have a great time with no problems. I listened to the band that has the issues with Hook, Line and even though they had a verbal agreement with HLD and Terrie, it was a business decision to not have them play there. I personally don't think their music would have fit the typical HLD crowd. I am not sure what kind of following the Along For The Ride has, but I personally have never heard of them and I have been in the local rock scene for over ten years. Enough of my opinion. For a great time this summer make sure to visit Hook, Line and Drinkers. Motherload will be there with CODA on Saturday, April 7th.
P.S. - Unless you guys have Hook, Line and Drinkers permission, I think you should remove their copyrighted logo from this site. I am not a lawyer just looking out for both parties involved.
