Since their initial outbreak in 2004, the fire has spread to surrounding the communities of Boone, Des Moines, Johnston, Nevada, Ogden, Sigourney, Story City, West Des Moines, Jewell and Zearing. Local Fire Departments and health centers have been mobilized to contain this spread.
