Tucked into a slim storefront in Royal Oak, a few dozen feet from the train tracks that cut through town, Burn Rubber doesn't attract much attention from the street. But across metro Detroit - and on the Internet - people with a certain kind of shoe fetish are buzzing about what's for sale at the small boutique, and they're beating a path to its door.
For people who collect rare and vintage sneakers, Burn Rubber is the only game in town. It's actually on of the few places in the state that sells collectible athletic shoes - which manufacturers like Nike, Adidas, Converse and Vans are churning out to satisfy customers' nostalgia for the kicks of their youth, or those just hungry for fashionable footwear.
Burn Rubber owners Roland Coit & Rick Williams say "sneaker freaks" who shell out up to $250 per pair are a mix of musicians, soccer moms, athletes and executives. Some buy a pair here or there; others track releases on Web sites and snap up whatever's hot. Nike, for example, launches a monthly Quick Strike, a special, limited-edition shoe available only to subscribers. On the trendy side, Burn Rubber has a revolving collection of sneakers suitable for casual days at the office or unusual shoes like the Nike Rift."
