   Burrito Club Philly's Blurbs
About me:
Like Pizza Club before it, Burrito Club examines a specific chunk of Philly cuisine while uniting like-minded fellows in the pursuit of its absolute perfection. With that in mind, it is necessary to be critical when looking closely at something held in such high esteem. Call it tough love.

Burrito Club meets sporadically but with the greatest of pride and purest of motives. We eat heartily and then weigh the strengths and weaknesses of each meeting's designated burrito merchant. The results are then compiled and made available in blog form for the scrutiny and guidance of all.

This is the beginning of a grand discourse. Come hungry.

ON THE AGENDA (in no particular order):

Cruz's Pizza And Mexican Restaurant

Tijuana Taco Too (The Bourse, Old City)

El Camino Real (1040 N. 2nd St., Liberties Walk)

Mesa Fresh Mexican Grill (locations in Wayne, Frazer, and Springfield)

Las Tarascas en Zocalo (3600 Lancaster Ave., West Philly)

Taqueria La Rosa (227 W. Allegheny Ave., North Philly)

Hot Tamales (1805 JFK Blvd., Center City)

Mission Burrito (32 W. Baltimore Ave., Lansdowne)

12th St. Cantina Express (Bellvue)

Taqueria Raza (5th & Allegheny, North Philly)

Chipotle (4030 City Ave., Bala Cynwyd)

Savoy (264 S. 18th St., Rittenhouse)

Acapulco (9th & Ellsworth, South Philly)

Las Bugambilias (South St.)

Johnny Manana's (East Falls; soon at 2031 Walnut St.)

La Cava (60 E. Butler Ave., Ambler)

La Esperanza (40 E. Gibbsboro Rd., Lindenwood, NJ)

SUGGESTIONS WELCOME!!

Who I'd like to meet:
COMMON CRITERIA:

* Tangibility of burrito: isn't too sloppy and doesn't fall apart

* Moisture of both burrito and fillings: meat's not too dry, and burrito's not too soggy

* Heat: especially in relation to the heat level requested

* Amount of filler: not too much or too little rice, beans, onions, peppers, etc.

* Even distribution of main filling, filler, and sour cream, guac, etc.

* How you feel, um, INSIDE after eating the burrito

Also great in New York: Brooklyn's Zocalo, right off the Marcy Avenue stop. Everyone's meals were stellar; I got a huge pork mole burrito (I know, right?) and a La Michelada, which is a Mexican beer with limes, chili sauce, and ice. It was punchy and refreshing and five bucks. Yum! http://www. zocalony. com

Friends, I had one of the best burritos of my life today in New York City at Pax Wholesome Foods. It contained beef brisket (amazing), black beans, peppers and onions (instead of rice), lettuce, sour cream, guac (an extra $1.50 for a little bit but yummy), and as a topping, corn poblano (medium spiciness). Result: huge and insanely flavorful. Nearly ten bucks with tax and guac but well worth it. They also have turkey and other great meat options as well as veggies.

from the Inquirer's Drink column:
By Craig LaBan, Inquirer Restaurant Critic
Many high-end Mexican restaurants lavish bar space on expansive collections of premium tequila. The new Cantina Dos Segundos in Northern Liberties is one of the few that also offers fine examples of tequila's wild and rustic cousin: mezcal.
Cantina has nine in stock - none of which comes with a worm. But just sip one of the rare "single village mezcals" from Del Maguey, an importer that has collected artisan, clay-pot-distilled brews from remote outposts around Oaxaca, and you'll know why these are among the most intense and interesting spirits out there. Chichicapa ($15), my favorite, is like a fiery, fruit-tinged, liquid bacon. Some liken Minero to watermelon-flavored bubble gum. The super-luxe Pechuga ($38 a shot), meanwhile, is a spirit-world oddity that involves chicken breast (plus wild fruits and almonds), and has an intensely earthy, complex and smoky terroir. The chicken, obviously, beats a worm.
Most Del Maguey mezcals are $15 a shot at Cantina Dos Segundos (931 N. 2nd St., 215-629-0500), but a three-shot flight is $20. Bottles of Chichicapa, online for $73.99 after Dec. 1 at www. pawineandspirits. com.

Owen Kamihira who has had extended success with Spanish tapas at Bar Ferdinand is opening El Camino Real (1040 N. 2nd St.) across Liberties Walk this month. The former Deuce will be reborn as a Texas barbecue and burrito bar.

from Citypaper's column Feeding Frenzy:

>> The first kinda-near-Center-City location of Chipotle is up for mid-December in the Radian building at 39th and Walnut.

>> Speaking of burritos: The long-awaited second location of El Fuego (2104 Chestnut St.) will have its grand opening Mon., Sept. 22.

from Metro's column The Bite:
[As] El Fuego (2104 Chestnut St., 215-592-1901, www. elfuegoburritos. com) prepares for their opening, the chalkboard menus are filled in with the same burrito, taco and quesadilla goodness their Washington Square location offers. The liquor license here and promise of evening DJs will ensure the sidewalks don’t roll up too early.

from Citypaper:

Chipotle
4030 City Ave.
215-878-0452
Mexican/Southwest, City Line
As a fresh and semi-healthier alternative to Taco Bell-style Tex-Mex, Chipotle has inspired rabid devotion in everyone from food snobs to impoverished college students. The tacos, burritos and burrito bowls are customizable at every level - choose your meat, veggies, salsa and even your own taco shells. The oddly futuristic, Aztec-inspired décor is certainly peculiar, but instead of wondering why you're sitting inside what looks like an ancient Mexican UFO, it's better just to eat yourself into a happy, chili-scented stupor. Open daily, 11 a.m.-10 p.m.

from the Inquirer's Food And Drinq blog:

Michael Ortega says he's running out of space at his Pico de Gallo at 15th and South Streets. It's either cut the menu in half or open a second location in Philly.
He's considering a spot across the street or a storefront around Ninth Street and Washington Avenue in the Italian Market. When reminded that the Italian Market has many Mexican restaurants, the San Antonio native mentioned that Pico de Gallo correctly is Tex-Mex. He also owns El Rey del Sol in Greenwich Village.

from CNN:
Investigators had a "significant break" in tracking the salmonella outbreak when they found the bacteria on a jalapeño pepper imported from Mexico at a Texas food supplier, the Food and Drug Administration announced Monday.

The FDA also warned consumers not to eat fresh jalapeños and products made with fresh jalapeños.

The discovery may provide a clue to the source of a recent outbreak of Salmonella Saintpaul. The bacteria have sickened more than 1,200 people in 42 states, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"One of the jalapeño peppers has tested positive with a genetic match to the Saintpaul strand," said Robert Tauxe, deputy director of the CDC's Division of Foodborne, Bacterial and Mycotic Diseases.

from Metro:

Before the end of July we should see Jose Garces (Amada and Tinto fame) opening his fun Mexico City-themed restaurant, Distrito (3945 Chestnut St.) in University City. The bi-level space will embrace the bustling atmosphere of a Mexico City market with bright colors and patterns, and there will be vending machines that offer Mexican action figures.

from the Wall Street Journal:

Restaurants and supermarkets across the country pulled certain fresh tomatoes from their menus and produce aisles in response to concerns about a recent spate of salmonella cases, delivering a serious blow to the nation's tomato growers.

Fast-food chains McDonald's Corp. and Burger King Holdings Inc. and retailers Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Kroger Co. were among those that said Monday they were suspending the sale of raw tomatoes until the cause of the salmonella outbreak becomes clearer. Sliced tomatoes came off Burger King Whoppers, and customers at Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc. did without tomato salsa.
