ETHNOBOTANY is the study of the relationship between plants and people: From"ethno" - study of people and "botany" - study of plants. Ethnobotany is considered a branch of ethnobiology. Ethnobotany studies the complex relationships between (uses of) plants and cultures. The focus of ethnobotany is on how plants have been or are used, managed and perceived in human societies and includes plants used for food, medicine, divination, cosmetics, dyeing, textiles, for building, tools, currency, clothing, rituals, social life, and music. Biophony
The wild soundscapes of this world originated in the forests, deserts, and mountains of our domain. These 'biological symphonies' -- or biophoniesâ„¢ -- inspired humans to dance, sing, and express themselves through language and art. Drawing upon our singular collection of these rare biophonies, Wild Sanctuary research and outreach explores a variety of natural, historical, and cultural uses; linking our ancient and contemporary connections to the very soundscapes that have enriched and informed our lives -- from our origins to the present.
"Bernie Krause and his niche theory are the real thing. His originality, research, and above all basic knowledge of the sound environments in nature are impressive. The idea of music originating in the sound communication systems of wild animals (including insects) is a sound and provocative hypothesis. I admire also his attention to the preservation of ancestral-level cultures for their own value but also as a testing ground for theory on human behavioral evolution."
Edward O. Wilson Harvard University, 3 November 2006
ETHNIC FUSION MUSIC
refers to the strain of New Age music that brings the instruments, sounds and themes of different cultures together in soft-focus music geared toward spiritual health, meditation or growth. Proponents of Ethnic Fusion vary from the flamenco-influenced guitarist Ottmar Liebert, to the east-meets-west synth artist Kitaro, to Nigerian composer Suru Ekeh.
TECHNO-TRIBAL MUSIC
lives at the intersection of Ethnic Fusion, New Age and electronic listening music. Progressive Electro-Acoustic artists like John Hassell, Djam Karet and Michael Brook recreate traditional sounds from native cultures in the Americas, Africa and Australia with '90s technological sophistication. Successful Techno-Tribal music accurately preserves the subtleties of primordial rhythms and tones in a manner that is reverent, celebratory and innovative, even as it places very modern digital sounds and techniques in the foreground.

MODERN ETHNOBOTANY
Beginning in the 20th century, the field of ethnobotany experienced a shift from the raw compilation of data to a greater methodological and conceptual reorientation. This is also the beginning of academic ethnobotany. Today the field of ethnobotany requires a variety of skills: botanical training for the identification and preservation of plant specimens; anthropological training to understand the cultural concepts around the perception of plants; linguistic training, at least enough to transcribe local terms and understand native morphology, syntax,

FASHION
Style from the earth
Tuai Auva'a wears a creation by Monty Tupuola
designed for the 2007 Miss American Samoa
pageant.
Tuai's dress is made entirely from plaited coconut
fronds. The fronds are boiled and dyed to become flexible and soft before the
dress is fashioned. A sash, woven from coconut fiber, sets off the waist in
striking complimentary earthen tones.
Her traditional headdress, called the "tuiga" is
constructed of fiber from the coconut and adorned with shaped and polished
coconut shell.
The neckless is also made from coconut
shell.
And what a stunning Pacific image Tuai presented
before the audience. Her poise and couture was 100% Pacific — 1000% World
Fashion.
Siapo, or the pressed cloth material made from the bark of the mulberry tree, is used here to fashion this stunning ensemble. Worn by Keresesa Puailoa for the 2008 Miss Amerika Samoa Pageant, the pattern design mimics the traditional pe'a or full body tattoo of the Samoan culture. The pattern was drawn onto the fabric from the residue charcoal ash of the umu, or earthen oven fire used for cooking.
Kere's's headress is made from dyed human hair adorned with feathers from the bird of paradise. Her necklace and armband is styled from the tusks of the wild boar. Kere's's face paint is a pigmented mixture of the lopa tree seed.
Poised in the actions of the Samoan dance, Keresesa, sets classic pose of the South Pacific and a sample of where world "green" fashion may be headed in years to come.
關於我: Regular guy, married, kids, cool job. Old but not a geezer.
The Pacific Arts Festival came to Pago Pago, American Samoa from July 20 to August 2, 2008. Visitors were treated to the color and dance of the Pacific. No attention was paid to ancient cultural values except through the western lens. What we saw were refined hotel stage shows produced for the tourist trade. The arts were emblematic of a flea market atmosphere. To the credit of the Australian contingent emphasis on traditional cultures there was most apparent. Nowhere did we find the discussion of historical roots that controvened the "modern" view of 20th century Pacific. The true origins of Polynesian culture are in Southeast Asia. It was there, 40,000 years ago, when rising waters flooded the land bridges of ancient Sundra, that ancient people began the great voyaging tradition of pacific people, but mostly the Polynesians. At first, bamboo rafts connected water passages. As distances grew longer, and adventurers more adventurous, hollowed canoes and double hulled canoes became dominant methods of travel.
Thousands of years later, only six thousand years ago, coastal voyagers from Southeast Asia and South Asia, mainly Taiwan, began their settlement journeys through the Philippines, Micronesia and Melanesia bringing with them strong religious and spiritual beliefs. These beliefs, mainly of the vedic tradition, the precursor to Hinduism, followed the dualistic beliefs of good and evil, light and dark, heaven and earth. It was up to the demi-gods of the earth and spiritual gods of heaven to balance good and evil and allow humankind to create harmony, balance, duplication and renewal into their culture, arts and beliefs.
Today those traditions still form the basic tenets of Polynesian society.
But since the introduction of Christianity only two hundred years ago, western influence has eroded many of the ancient beliefs. In Christian thought evil is to be defeated not balanced, as is the vedic tradition dominant in Polynesian belief. Christianity taught that Polynesians were to be saved from evil and that beliefs otherwise were savage, unsophisticated, corrupt and uncultured.
It is this Christian imposed guilt upon Polynesians that has dominated Polynesian religious belief in the 19th and 20th centuries.
In fact the eastern tradition of oneness with nature, spiritual acts, or kharma, balance of mind and the belief in natural spiritual forces which define the sophisticated ritualism of the Southeast Asia descendents, the modern Polynesian.
it is to these ancients beliefs, and the revival of them, that I have repurposed the BusyCorner Myspace page.
Luxury accommodations and amenities. The Pacific's most pristeen rainforests and coral reefs.
Pago Pago surprises even the most discerning world luxury eco-tourism travelers.
Luxury in American Samoa
Lush hotels, a world famous mural, stretch limo service and sashima to travel for. Welcome to American Samoa
我想認識: There will no doubt be "pushing back" of the ideas presented here. Today even Polynesians define themselves in western, Christian terms. This is understandable after 200 years of religious influence. Some will, however, seek to learn more about the ancient ways of the their Pacific and Polynesian ancestors and the spiritual beliefs they brought with them from Southeast Asia.
The reality of course is that Polynesians were highly sophisticated, incredibly intelligent and fearless voyagers. It was indeed their very belief in nature that allowed them to extend beyond the horizon into 10 million square mile of the Pacific thousands of years before the European navigators broke free from coastal voyaging. This largely untold story contradicts the missionary version of uneducated, savage and uncultured peoples western society has been led to believe as accurate.
