  • Bio

In 1991, The Butterbean Jazz Quartet was formed by Zip Irvin, John Winn and Jim Dudley. They started the weekly Sunday evening gig at Bottom’s Up Pizza which has persevered through the years and has become a main-stay in the Richmond’s Shockhoe Bottom. As the years passed members of the quartet have changed. The most present line up is Lee Covington (Piano), Terri Simpson (Vocals), Rusty Farmer (Acoustic Bass), Keith Willingham (Drums/Trumpet), and often joined by Kevin Simpson (Tenor/Soprano Sax). Terri, Lee, and Rusty met at Virginia Commonwealth University where they received Bachelor of Music degrees in Jazz Studies. These four musicians have an intuitive spirit to bring alive an old jazz standard like “Autumn Leaves” and or more contemporary favorites such as “Stronger than Pride”. This is truly improvised music at the highest level. In recent years the Butterbeans have had the pleasure of opening for Chaka Kahn and Peter White at the Kanawha Plaza’s Fridays at Sunset. The Butterbean Jazz Quartet will be releasing their debut album in January 2009.
