"Butterjive showing great chops & how to have great sound in the room, so clean & so very tasty" -Ian Bruce - Director - Lehigh Valley Music Awards
"No matter what you hear in a Butterjive show, you can move to the steady groove. There's a lot of rhythm with two percussionists, a ''chunky'' sound from the chording of one or sometimes two guitars, and driving electric bass."
-Dave Howell - The Morning Call/Go Guide - Sept. 2007
"Butterjive is a pretty amazing experience that you're not going to want to miss... If you're at all into jazz funk, these guys are a must-hear. Unafraid of experimentation, they stick true to their creative voices and come out with music that's easy to move to and easy to love." -Pulse Weekly - Jan. 2008
"...a staple of the Lehigh Valley music scene..."
-Dustin Schoof - The Express Times - June 2008
Formed in March of 2006, Butterjive is an upbeat instrumental quintet that thrives on improvisation and groove in a live atmosphere. Having solidified their line-up with drummer Derek Smith joining the band in the fall of '07, Butterjive is making moves in the studio and on the stage. Expect the unexpected when listening to their music. Full of twists, turns, and genre-bending compositions, Butterjive's catalog contains everything from funk to rock to reggae to latin and beyond. Think Medeski, Martin, and Wood jamming with the Wailers and Santana, sans vocals, and you're in Butterjive's ballpark.
Butterjive has made appearances at Musikfest, which is among the largest music and arts festivals in the country, High Tide Jamfest, Mayfair, SolFest, Halloluna, and Boogie in the Bungalow as well as many intimate venues such as North Star Bar, The Pillar Lounge, The Funhouse, and Grape Street Pub, to name only a few. The band has been broadcast and interviewed on local radio stations in addition to making a television appearance on "Arts in the Valley" - a local arts-focused television show broadcast on PBS. The band recently won a people's choice award at the 10th annual Lehigh Valley Music Awards in December 2008. Based in the Lehigh Valley and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the band plays regularly in the state's Southeast Region and is looking to branch out into the east coast jam band scene in the near future.
Top-notch musicianship, articulate and diverse originals, energetic live shows, and true dedication to their craft make Butterjive a musical experience you won't want to miss night after night.
