Sounds Like
Strings, synths and beats dipped in T-1000 liquid metal and fan-shot with pink fairie dust, whilst being sung at in a lost Carnival space station hovering beside Solaris I guess...with a twist of green chartreuse and washed up child stars and talk show hosts attempting therapy.
cOt3rie is taking a break right now. Tristen is producing music and remixing for other projects, but mainly sorting out his exciting new duo project with L.A producer Thomas Dietrich, which will be called dESIGNER vIOLENCE. Coming soon to an ear drum near you.
His second novel is long finished, and research for number three is about to commence.
Coterie is the free-wired audio dripper constructed by Tristen Deschain. Tristen combines elements of distorted filth with a lush dreaminess (‘Hybrid Pop’).
Hybrid Pop: Writing simple catchy melodies. Playing those melodies with carefully and hap-hazardly manipulated sounds.

This is the fourth serious musical project Tristen has been in, and the number of members manage to get fewer and fewer each time.
Tristen started playing music in a band called Valerie Violet -a four piece Goth-Jazz ensemble using junk-purcussion, guitars and keyboards. Although writing most of the purcussion and guitars for the band, Tristen performed vocals live.
The second was a murky atmospheric trip-rock band called FIVEANDAHALFMINUTES (still on myspace maybe) with producer Simon St. Marcus. They released a six track E.P with local New Zealand label R.T.O Records. In the band, Tristen composed guitars, all vocals, some drums and lotsa noise and keyboards. The bands popularity grew and they played a few festivals in strange remote places in New Zealand and packed out many inner city venues. The track ‘Cut Faces’ largely produced by Tristen was remixed several times by various artists including the now D.F.A signed Nick Harte of the Shocking Pinks, a close friend.
The Third was a dreamy electro-shoe gaze band called bREAK mISSION kILLS with Misfit Mod writer and producer Sarah Kelleher. A five track E.P was also released with this band. Tristen stepped aside on the vocal duties for this project and left that, and most of the keyboards to Sarah. Tristen did most of the guitars and bass. The roles were a lot more clear cut and Tristen regards this project as the most important to his growth as a composer. The track ‘Every Kitten’ was highly regarded and reached the charts in local radio stations.
Which brings us to the solo project known as Coterie. Alone, but still arguing about songs, but this time just with himself and himself only.
Some of Tristen’s main musical influences include: Failure, Autolux, My Bloody Valentine, Soul Coughing and Morphine.
Tristen is also a writer, and working on his second novel which reads like his music sounds, in a certain sense. He has written articles for Art Magazines, Art Galleries, News Papers, Websites and Gig Guides.
Hailing from Green New Zealand, living in Grey London.
Killing everything he eats.
Always striving to be less unhealthy.
Hard working and a repedative failure at mundane routine, Tristen has no other option but to make a long term living from writing and composition.
