Reaching its capacity after the most select were summoned, angels removed the bridges leading into the holy city.
A glorious age was at hand.
The city began a love affair with itself.
Some say she was the love child of the entire city; some say she was smuggled in with the last influx of beautiful people.
Regardless, KiKi was beauty and love.
With her came Spring Eternal. Xanadu in the South.
The daughter of a great actress, or singer or dancer, she was famed to have a voice that lured a Sultan of the Ottoman Empire away from his homeland. It is rumored he is still aboard a non-descript vessel moored in the harbor, awaiting her.
Some of the worlds most beautiful portraits were attempted but never finished, as even the most talented painters could not capture the beauty of her eyes, and therefore resigned themselves to the lives of laborers.
That was the beginning of the end for this place.
Sculptures were reduced to mere rubble, and musicians detuned their strings.
Artists failed to find perfection.
Lovers battled in the streets, furious that the other was not Kiki.
Children went unwashed and wandered aimlessly looking for their mothers.
Women spent their days charting how the suns slow dive mirrored their burgeoning desire for nocturnal carousing. Men rifled through cafs and bawdy rooms seeking the One that preoccupied their dreams.
In such haste, no one realized the cabaret's quiet surrender.
With the entire city preoccupied with unrequited missions, they failed to notice bridges and causeways being constructed from outlying areas, or the glow of night torches, or the sounds of other desperate hoards in search of love.
It was not long before it was all over.
The city was lost.
Filled with desperation and bad art, life droned, and passion was usurped by the practicality of repopulating the worming class.
