After playing together for over a decade in various projects and garage band jams, brothers Bruce and Keith Walkinshaw, along with their close friend Bojan Bugarinovic, recruited Ben Kelly to form a rock band. Since nursing a crow with a broken wing back to health as children, the brothers Walkinshaw have always been fond of crows; years later their new band would now be named after an area on the edge of Vancouver (near 12th and Boundary) where all the crows in the region go to sleep at night. Cabin One was born.
Immediately, the boys first order of business was to tighten up their live act. On a steady diet of bars and beer gardens, Cabin One took little time to find chemistry, creating an explosive blend of straight ahead rock and roll and classic punk. Anxious to make a demo, Cabin One enlisted the help of recording engineer Richard Dolmat at Digital Sound Magic Recording Studios, where they began recording in October of last year. Initially there to record just three songs, an inspired late night jam session on their last day of their four day booking produced basic tracks for five more songs. Returning a month later, the boys polished off the five additional tracks to create an EP of eight songs. Consisting of five songs from their live show and three additional songs from singer/song-writer Bruce Walkinshaw's lengthy song catalog, "Cabin One: The Demo EP" was released for sale in early March.
When asked to describe their sound, Cabin One's usual response is homage to their heroes: “The Clash meets Oasis in bar owned by Keith Richards.” Despite their British rock influences, however, Cabin One are a distinctly Canadian band. With songs such as “Far”, a tribute to Canadian cancer hero Terry Fox, or “The Best Of Your Love” which borrows from a Coast Salish traditional love tale, Bruce names Canadian giants such as Leonard Cohen and Gordon Downie as some of his biggest lyrical influences. This summer Cabin One look forward to playing shows, promoting their band and supporting their first eight song album- CABIN ONE: The Demo EP
