WELCOME The CACHAGUA PLAYBOYS take their name from the remote area of Cachagua, in upper Carmel Valley, California, a favorite hiding place of the local native people during the Spanish missions period. Since our humble beginnings in December of 1993, our aim is to share the heritage of Louisiana's traditional Cajun and Zydeco music. Being very fond of the music of Clifton Chenier, Beausoleil, Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys, and Boozoo Chavis, to name but a few, the Cachagua Playboys share many of these artists' songs with their California audiences. Having honed their skills playing many other styles of music, the 'boys have created a unique sound, best described as "Americana". With the recent release of the second CD " SURF ZYDECO" the Playboys are attempting to bridge the distance from California to the deep south, taking listeners on a ride through many styles of music on one disc.
They have appeared at many festivals including the Monterey Bay Blues Festival, The Monterey World Music Festival, the Cotati Accordion Festival, Marina Festival of the Winds, First Night Monterey and Galante Vineyards concerts. Most recently the Playboys opened for legendary songwriter Tom Russell at the Moonlight Mountaintop Festival at Ventana Rim Ranch. They have also shared the stage with music legends such as Asleep at the Wheel, John Delafose, Danny Pollard, Deke Dickerson, Aaron and Charles Neville, Steven Bruton, Robert Earl Keen, the Iguanas and many others. They have been interviewed on numerous radio stations in Monterey, Santa Cruz and Santa Clara counties, including KPIG, KZSC, KUSP, KKUP and KAZU, and also KKCR in Kauai, Hawaii.
In January, 2001 they released their first CD, "The Cachagua Playboys" containing original songs and cover versions of Jerry Garcia's "Deal" and Professor Longhair's classic "She Walks Right In". The Cachagua Playboys have become a favorite band on the Central California Coast and are regularly welcomed to perform by anxious dancers and happy fans. The Cachagua Playboys are: JOHN TALLON - Drums, Vocals RICK CHELEW - Bass Guitar, Vocals MIKE ECKSTROM - Guitar, Rub Board, Vocals PAT CLARK - Fiddle, Guitar, Vocals KEVIN GOULD - Accordian, Vocals
The Cachagua Playboys are enjoying their 13th year as a Zydeco/Americana band. They continue to add to their expansive repertoire of songs originating from the dream state of Louisiana and Texas. Their set list includes original two-steps, shuffles, waltzes and ballads which reflect both their California roots and their adopted genres with unique treatments of their favorite songs from the likes of Clifton Chenier, Geno Delaphose, Beausoleil, The Wild Tchoupitoulas, Chris Kenner, Professor Longhair, Boozoo Chavis, Chubby Carrier, Chuck Berry, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams, Peter Rowan, Sam Cooke and The Beach Boys
-Here's what some of the critics are saying!....
-"This new album proves the boys are no one-trick pony, but a diverse and talented group (ten out of the thirteen tunes are band originals) who not only can play their respective instruments, but can all write and sing as well, and have a lot of fun doing it! You'll have a blast just listening. In fact, if you can sit still while listening to this album, you may want to have your pulse checked pronto. - Mac MacDonald, The Monterey Herald and Go! Magazine
A translation of a Dutch review:
Swamp meets surf ... and I'd bet all my money that he lives somewhere near California. More specifically in Monterey, and that name might ring a bell for the music lover. The legendary Monterey International Pop Festival and the Monterey Jazz Festival are the main musical extravaganzas and the home base of the Cachagua (kush ow' uh) Playboys, who, with their album "Surf Zydeco" leave an excellent impression. Cajun, Zydeco & New Orleans Mardi Gras Boogie, in other words, a nice (little) course in music - with - which - I - just - can't - sit - still. Forty four minutes, to be precise, have to suffice to make sure you'll never embarrass yourself again when you dare to raise the cry "Let's Zydeco". The opening track, complete with hip-hop style scratch and rapping, immediately signals that also in the Cajun / Zydeco world the newest musical developments are being applied. Purists might prefer to stick to the more traditional, which gets its turn plentifully with the instrumental pieces "Luziana Feelin' " (J.R. Carrier), "the Hucklebuck" (!), the self-scribed and nice sing-alongs "Crush On You", "I Don't Care". Enough to get the feet off the ground and then even a "Second Hand Bride" might come in handy. Aficionados who look a bit further than the end of their nose* will also appreciate the country tune "Don't Come Knockin' ", the ragtime to "Till Death Do Us Part" (with guitarist/ fiddler Pat Clark in the humoristic lead, the Tex - Mex sound [?] to "Before the Sunrise" and "Two White Horses" and an excellent soulful cover of Sam Cooke's "Bring It On Home to Me" (Kevin Gould on accordion). Despite the fact that some voice parts do not meet all quality standards (but hey, they are the Cachagua Playboys, not the Beach Boys). The gentlemen: Rick Chelew: Producer/electric and upright bass, baritone ukelele, electric slide guitar, acoustic rhythm guitar, djembe and conga drums, vocals Pat Clark: Electric lead, acoustic, and resonator guitars, mandolin, fiddle, vocals // Mike Eckstrom: Acoustic guitar, rub board, triangle, jaw harp, vocals // Kevin Gould: Accordion, vocals // John Tallon: Drums, tambourine, cowbell, chair, shaker, gourd, vocals don't leave any doubt ... title track and finishing piece "Surf Zydeco" shows what the band has to offer ... "a droning instrumental jam, complete with ocean waves and jaw harp twang" We don't need anything more than that!
-"Out of California's Central Coast comes a band respectfully borrowing traditional sounds of the Bayou and blending them with their own West Coast roots." --- Sleepy John Sandidge - KPIG Radio 107.5 FM
-"If you're looking to lose yourself in gaiety and stompin' good Cajun/Zydeco music, then be sure to catch them next time they play" - Beth Peerless, Go! Magazine and The Monterey Herald
-"The Playboys always deliver a high-octane blend of Louisiana style music... The group's high-energy presentation will be a tough act to follow." - Monterey County Weekly
-"The Cachagua Playboys are an awesome, awesome band!" Moe Ammar, Pacific Grove Chamber of Commerce
