Cafe Jazz's Blurbs |
About me:
It was on a Monday night in September 1997 when Café Jazz first crackled onto the air, in French, on CKXL in Winnipeg continuing in that slot for two years. In September of 1998, we also began broadcasting on CJUM, once again in Winnipeg, on Sunday mornings at 8AM and continued at that familiar hour for four years. For one full year, Canada's Smooth Jazz Connection was heard in Winnipeg in both official languages and as such is perhaps the only show in Canada, most certainly the only Smooth Jazz show in Canada, to have had that distinction!
The spring and summer of 1998, saw the formation of Jazz Lynx, the company created to act as an umbrella for all projects that went beyond the radio show, thus launching Jazz Lynx & Café Jazz.
Broadcasters look to Ted for his expertise. As Jazz Lynx, he was consulted by the management team of CIWV The Wave, Canada's first smooth jazz station, prior to the launch of their station in September 2000. In addition, he's worked with several companies and the CRTC, providing advice and guidance on the format, and as well, he's also appeared at three separate CRTC hearings in support of applications for Smooth Jazz licenses in Canada.
In May 2001, Café Jazz was picked up by CJRT, JAZZ.FM 91 in Toronto - as part of their Sunday morning schedule Café Jazz enjoyed one year of broadcast in Canada's largest market, all of southern Ontario as well as portions of upstate New York. In February of 2002, we launched our own combined Jazz Lynx & Café Jazz web site while in the spring of that same year we moved over to CKDX (Foxy 88.5 FM) once again in Toronto. Beginning in 2005, Café Jazz began being heard on the airwaves outside of Canada with KHBL located in Mark Twain's home town of Hannibal Missouri becoming our first US affiliate. With back-to-back shows airing each Sunday, station prez David P. Norman boasts of a line up containing "Four hours of the finest smooth jazz on this or any other planet"!
For his efforts, early in 2007, The Canadian Smooth Jazz Awards nominated Ted as Smooth Jazz Broadcaster of the Year for the previous year, and although he didn't win, it was a great honour considering he had no background in broadcasting whatsoever. The following year, Café Jazz went international - currently the program is heard on affiliates in Canada, the US, the UK, Chile, and all points in between thru the internet!! More recently, Ted picked up a 2008 CSJA nomination for Broadcaster of the Year - his second nod in three years!!
Ted's passion for music comes through in the selections he chooses as well as in the knowledge he brings to the program through thorough research and interviews. Artists look to Ted for his advice, his genuine interest in their music and his integrity - he's always considered it a personal privilege to expose and support new artists. Fans can always expect a personal answer to their e-mail and phone calls. In fact, over the years many friendships have developed in this very manner. Now several hundred programs after our premiere edition, the Café Jazz mission remains "to win listeners over one at a time, to have fun, and to showcase the very best in smooth jazz from around the world."
