Cafe' Mars consists of an all-star line-up of Raleigh/Durham-area musicians, and can be found most any night of the week at area restaurants and clubs, or regionally at corporate and private events delivering a unique fusion of Jazz, R&B and Top 40 hits from the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's and today - including everything from contemporary jazz to funk to the smoothest R&B, all filtered through an unusually high-level of experience and musicianship.
Musically-speaking, this is not a cliche' wedding band . . . not even close. While they are regularly hired for high-end weddings and corporate events, it is because of the quality, versatility and uniqueness of their live sets, . . . not because of stereotypical expectations. If you want a band that can keep 'em on the floor dancing, . . . no problem. If you need them to create a more sophisticated "listening" environment, these guys can even deliver that, at a level unmatched by typical cover bands.
While some bands make a "claim" of versatility, it is usually at the expense of the music itself. With Cafe' Mars, "versatility" is delivered at an uncompromising level of musicianship and performance. A brief resume' of each member bears out the quality, experience and professionalism comprising Cafe' Mars:
CHARLOTTE GREGORY (vocal) - has performed alongside Trisha Yearwood, Ricochet, Ken Mellons, Rhett Akins, Rockin' Country, worked with songwriters such as Charlie Monk, and even did a short stint as an Opryland cast performer. In addition to many other pageant titles, she was Majestic Ms. North Carolina in 2000. Charlotte also shares lead vocal duties in Bull City Syndicate.
FREDERICK OWENS (keyboards/vocals) - has been performing on the Broadway stage, in TV and major motion pictures, and doing commercial voice-overs, for almost 30 years. Frederick was an original cast member of the Grammy Award winning show, Smokey Joe's Café. Also among his many credits are appearances in Dreamgirls, Man of La Mancha, Little Shop of Horrors, and Jesus Christ Superstar. He was last seen in the hit comedy Hitch starring Will Smith and Eva Mendes. Isaac Hayes, Gwen Guthrie, Gladys Knight, Pam Tillis, and Ben E. King are just a few of the many artists he's performed with.
STEVE BAKER (horns/vocal) - also currently lead trumpet and vocalist for Bull City Syndicate, Steve has performed with and managed several Grammy-winning and nominated acts over the last 25 years, including B.J. Thomas, Kool & The Gang, Andre Crouch, PFR, Jars of Clay, John Custer, Eddie Money, and Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons. Steve is also in-demand as a freelance trumpeter and teacher.
KEN DEMERY (guitar) - from New York City, has performed and recorded with a variety of artists, including Melba Moore, Destiny’s Child, Coolio, Blood, Sweat and Tears and Groove Theory (Amel Larrieux). He has also appeared on major stages throughout the U.S. including RBC Center in Raleigh, Newark Symphony Hall, Cami Hall and The Paramount Theater in New York City, Mandalay Bay, Caesar's Palace and the Luxor in Las Vegas.
DUANE TOWNES (bass guitar) - from Henderson, NC, Duane born into a musical family - his dad playing trumpet and baritone horn in the U.S. Army band. After starting on the trumpet and saxophone in school, he switched to the bass guitar because as he said, "The Jackson 5 played guitars!". He graduated from N.C. Central University where he played for the school's jazz band, and there met renowned jazz trumpeter Donald Byrd, and ended playing in Byrd's band, "PHUN". In addition to performing in many R&B groups Duane has enjoyed playing with several Gospel groups and churches.
ROBERT MAKAR, (drums), from New Jersey, was lucky to be taught by some of the finest educators of the northeast including Thom Hannum and Joe Morello. Since moving to North Carolina, Bob has played with such notable acts such as Wilder Brother, Bobby Bear, Crowd, Mojo Collins and is also currently the drummer for NC's premier funk/horn band, Bull City Syndicate. His infectious groove will get everyone on the dance floor!

Yep, we lost our one and only jazz club here in Winston. It's so bad, I decided to concentrate on recording a CD in my home studio until things open up...hopefully it will soon.
