The Cage Warriors Fighting Championships (CWFC) is a Mixed Martial Arts event which has been running shows across the UK since July 2002. Cage Warriors came about after events like the Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC) and Pride Fighting Championships (Japan) rose to fame in the 1990’s under the premise of finding the world’s best fighter and fighting style.
The first Cage Warriors event was held in London’s York Hall (a famous boxing venue) and the show started off with a bang, as an 8 man single elimination heavyweight tournament took place with a grand prize of £3,000 pounds (Roughly $6000USD) at stake. This was a figure that was unheard of in the UK at the time and as a result it got the attention of hardcore MMA fans that Cage Warriors meant business.
Cage Warriors returned in November 2002, with a show which featured a breathtaking encounter between Samy Schaivo and Jean Silva, and featured UFC veteran Jorge Rivera in the main event. Soon Cage Warriors branched out and toured the country during 2003 and 2004, putting on events in Barnsley, Newcastle, Portsmouth, Southampton, and Sheffield, whilst helping many other promotions too. During this time Cage Warriors’ reputation grew and they put on many memorable match-ups which featured the likes of Ian “The Machine” Freeman, Jorge Rivera, Matt Ewin, Gregory Bouchelaghem, Gerald “The Finishing Machine” Strebendt, Jean Silva, Alessio Sakara, Tengiz Tedoradze, “JZ” Calvancanti, Jeff Monson and many more.
However in 2005 Warrior Promotions, a UK based promotional company headed by Andrew Lillis took a controlling stake in Cage Warriors. Their impact was instantaneous as they transformed Cage Warriors into a truly international event which featured more stars from the USA, Brazil and Europe. Their first event named “Strike Force 1” at the Skydome Arena, Coventry featured a tense affair between fighters from the UK and France and set a UK attendance record for an MMA event (at the time).
There were a further five events in Coventry which featured such events as “UK vs. the World, UK vs. Scandinavia (which was known as the Viking Invasion) and UK vs. Germany. During this time Cage Warriors held their most successful event to date, as Cage Warriors Strike Force 4 when all 9 Cage Warriors' World Titles were on the line in an epic “Night of Champions” event which got critical acclaim from industry figures and fans alike.
This memorable show featured the likes of Jeff “The Snowman” Monson, Antonio Silva, Martin Kampmann, Ross Pointon, Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy, Matt “12 Gauge” Thorpe, Danny batten, paul McVeigh, Rosi Sexton and Michael “The Count” Bisping, who have since all found their way to top events around the world.
After being forced out of the Skydome by a local authority ban, Warrior Promotions moved their Cage Warriors franchise elsewhere and have promoted shows back in Sheffield, Nottingham and Wales, as well as working with other promotions in the UK and Europe.
Since December 2006 Cage Warriors have run five shows in Nottingham called “Enter The Rough House” which has seen a mixture of top European fighters battle it out. Whilst Warrior promotions have also managed several top UK fighters and have sent them to bigger shows around the world.
Cage Warriors hopes to continue growing during 2008 as they attempt to show why they are one of the UK's biggest and most respected MMA promotions, by continuing to put out well matched, high quality shows. There next event is on April 19th at the Harvey Hadden Centre in Nottingham
