Cahalen David Morrison - Subcontinent Folk, Americana, Blues
Finding this CD, released in mid-May, was a joy. Count it as not only one of my favorite folk/americana records of 2008, but as one of my favorite all around releases from Colorado in 2008. It's a limited release, with special enviro-friendly packaging - which I'm not a huge fan of, but it works well within the overall context of the music, the vibe, the earthiness of what Cahalen presents. He plays multiple instruments brilliantly, the voice is steady and he tells a hellova mean story.

Now, if Andy Irvine is "Woody Guthrie's representative on earth" then certainly Cahalen David Morrison would, at the very least, be one of Woody's regional deputies. On his brand new album, Subcontinent, available for the first time this Friday, June 13, at his Kinfolks gig, the talented local troubadour sings earnest, heartfelt ballads of America's new dustbowl. Obviously frustrated with the current state of things, Cahalen's songs build a bridge between pre-war (WWII) folk blues and post-war (WWIraq) politics. In "Song of the Lark," with a bluesy stomp, he sings "Which came first, the chicken or the egg? / Which came first, the prophet (profit?) or the beggar? / Which came first, the oil or the war? / I guess it doesn't matter "round here any more," and on the tender ballad "Chip O' Silicon," he sings, lamenting, "(I'd) trade my children for a drop of gasoline."
Amongst red rocks, dry soil, and clear sky, Cahalen was reared on Hot Rize, Doc Watson, Norman Blake and Rory Block while running around in a diaper, trying (at times unsuccessfully) not to fall into patches of prickly pear. Now, he has got the ears for roots music. He's got a nose for it too- putting it in every kind you've ever heard, hopping effortlessly from fingerpicking, to flat-picking, mandolin, clawhammer banjo, to lap slide guitar (not to mention that he is a trained and respected drummer). Cahalen's writing encompasses everything from punchy political commentaries, to soul warming serenades, branching out into instrumental rags and fiddle tunes, yet still attaining his subtle musical singature.
Though only 23, he is quite well traveled, and gaining on 'seasoned-ship'. In June of 2008, Cahalen debuted his first full length record. "Subcontinent" has been applauded by his peers, and by spun regularly by DJ's and fans across the country. After its release, Cahalen hit the road... hard, not spending more than two weeks anywhere for a solid 13 months before taking a break. From Santa Fe to Seattle, New Orleans to Minneapolis, Nashville to Boston, he has played most every nook and cranny of this fine country.
Cahalen's contributions can also be found playing banjo, mandolin, and lap slide and singing on 'the Monday EP' by Harbor Collective, his duo with miss Brianna Lane, and playing lap slide, lap steel, and singing harmony on 'Me-Shaped Hole' by miss Caroline Brewer.
In August, Cahalen recorded a live album with his dad, Dave Morrison on guitar and fiddle,Andy Cameron on fiddle, and Jenny Fisher on harmony vocals, at the historic Western Jubilee Warehouse in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Look for its release in October, 2009.
