Primarily acoustic stuff: folk, alt-country, bluegrass, etc. I particularly like doing stuff in the vein of Bert Jansch, John Rebourn, Nick Drake, Kelly Joe Phelps, etc. There's nothing like having the sound of a real piano though, especially with a double bass! I do like a little bit of Esbjörn Svensson Trio, John Martyn, Graham Coxon, Luke Doucet, Ryan Adams and the like. My dream is to go and see Ricky Skaggs & Kentucky Thunder live.
Here's a video I made featuring people I've recorded and explaining what I'm about...

Hello there musical boys & girls. My name is Oscar Cainer and I have decided to set up this project called Cainer Can Studios. I am the head sound engineer at the Green Note, where I've done the sound for people like Graham Coxon, Scott Matthews, Peter Rowan, Robin Wiliamson, plus I also spend a lot of time recording my band, my solo stuff and my band members' solo stuff. So I started to record other people and, after several years of it now, I like to think I've got pretty good at it. Come along, check out the space, maybe we can work together?
I used to run Oscar's Academy, a live night for up and coming acoustic acts and I met a lot of people who were rather good but had no decent recordings of their material, either because they had home studios but weren't particularly au fait with recording techniques or because they couldn't afford a nice plush studio to record in. Well I thought I'd bridge the gap. I operate in what can basically be described as the middle ground between a home studio and full on professional one. Yes, it all goes into a digital desk and computer in my house but I also have a separate, soundproofed room in which to record people. Not only that but it also boasts a real piano, a double bass and a drum kit. I aim to create high quality recordings for people who take their music seriously but can't justify spending their life savings in Abbey Road just yet. I don't really mind what kind of music I record but I specialize in acoustic music as it's what I work with. Having said that, I never use MIDI instruments or samples, etc. as it's not something I'm into or any good at. I like to record real musicians with real instruments. My place may also be a little bit small for live band recordings but if the band play the parts separately it does work. However, it's perfect for solo acts, duos or trios...
So that's that really, now all that's missing is the price. I charge £75 a day (weekdays) or £90 (weekends) and operate between 10.30am and 5.00pm, with a couple of short tea breaks and 30 mins or so for lunch. Generally I'm OK to carry on further into the evening if needed but it's good to check with me first as I may have sound engineering commitments. If it's only a little overtime to finish things off then I don't usually charge but if we go on late into the evening then it will be £10 per full hour. I don't charge for session work or using my instruments, however, damage and/or string breakage will have to be paid for! On an average day I tend to be able to get three or so songs recorded and mixed in that time, depending on how many instruments are used. I can also burn data discs of the recorded parts so that they can be worked on elsewhere and on other systems. Please bear in mind that mixing things takes longer than one would anticipate unless they are familiar with the process...
I'm based in Muswell Hill, London, which is a 10 minute ride on the 134 or 43 bus from Highgate tube on the Northern Line. Monday to Wednesday is best but I can be flexible and do some Thursday and Fridays. Weekends are also available but a slightly higher rate. So if you're interested, send me a message or e-mail me at oscar@cainercanstudios.com and we can work something out.

Hope your new year has started well. Have finally uploaded some of the tracks I recorded with you that have been mastered by Pete at Topfloor Music. Thanks for the recommendation, I am thrilled with the results. Your Double Bass playing sounds brilliant. I really enjoyed recording with you and will be in touch soon to record some new songs.
All the best for 2008.. I hope it's gonna be a good one. It's really great to know that there's guys like you out there. Anyone reading this should know that Oscar offers a great service and fantastic rates. He's also very good at his job. We've mastered many of his tunes and they are top notch.
