  • Bio

We love to groove on Brazilian music! Calango has been exploring the diversity of Brazil's music and putting our own twist on it since our beginning in 2004. Our music appeals to a wide audience; dancers, listeners, folks of any age! The band takes its name from the Portuguese word, Calango, which has several meanings, including a lizard (found in the Amazon Rainforest) that changes colors . Today's seven band members are a diverse group of musicians active locally and regionally. We bring classical training, jazz, and rock roots, international music and folkmusic endeavors, and years of performance experience to the stage. At any of our gigs, you can hear characteristic instruments from the Northeast of Brazil, such as accordion, triangle, and zabumba (bass drum) on one song, and the next song may feature instruments heard in Rio de Janeiro during Carnaval, or a riveting electric guitar solo on a jazzy samba. Always, Calango aims to share in an enriching musical experience with our audience. We hope to see you at a show soon! Calango is available for: private parties, festivals, establishments, community events and weddings. FOR BOOKING, CONTACT KIMBERLY CULLEN AT: kimberlycullen@earthlink.net
