We play the music we like—it could be Beethoven or Haydn, Bartok or Shostakovich, Christopher Rouse or Terry Riley, or music written by our friends. A lot of times our sound is described as old school (like a quartet from the 40s) but we play a lot of new music too. We try to get in the head of the composer and do everything in our power to understand what he’s going for. The music we play is sometimes hard to get at first listen but it’s the kind that deepens the more you listen to it. Your 10th listen is more intense than the 1st and that’s how you get hooked.
While we’re serious about our music, we try to create a laid back atmosphere at our shows. We started playing together nine years ago. We went to USC and the Colburn School, and now we’re finishing up a graduate program at Juilliard in New York. Although we’re still reppin’ the 213, 310, and 323, it’s sweet getting to spend time in NYC…but winter jackets cost way more than flip-flops.
