Ask anyone who has seen a performance or heard a song by Caleb Simms and you will get the same reaction…”Unlike anything I have ever heard or experienced!”
Born in Gary, Indiana, Caleb’s life as the son of an ordained minister has taken him to various places throughout the Midwest and Southeastern states. Like many other artists, Caleb began singing and performing in numerous churches as early as he can remember. While traveling with his family, he eventually ended up in Huntsville, Alabama where he currently resides. Inspired by local Oakwood College (a famous Seventh Day Adventist institution) Alums such as Brian McKnight and Take 6, Caleb started experimenting as a singer/songwriter in the same recording studios and venues as his idols. This would prove to lay the groundwork for Caleb’s strong work ethic and determination for being not only a great entertainer, but also a respected writer and vocalist.
Caleb’s professional career began as an active member of the singing group Devoue’. With Devoue’ Caleb began writing and recording demo songs for the group to perform and shop for a recording contract. Within a year Devoue’s demo landed in the hands of executives at Windswept Publishing located in Beverly Hills, California. They were so amazed by Caleb’s writing and singing ability that they offered him a writing deal (2000), which led to him leaving the group and moving to California to pursue a professional writing career. While working for Windswept, Caleb began working with such artists as Beyonce’, Ginuwine, Eric Benet, Sisqo, Boney James, and Will Downing just to name a few. This segment of Caleb’s life, which he refers to as “paying dues”, proved to be the turning point in his career.
Using the experience gained while working with some of the music industry’s elite, as well as performing solo or with various groups, Caleb has developed into an extremely polished vocalist as well as a unique and powerful entertainer. Having performed in a variety of arenas, Caleb has opened for numerous headliners, including, Brian McKnight, Goodie Mob, and such gospel legends as John P. Kee, Yolanda Adams, and Vanessa Bell Armstrong, In his own words describing his sound, Caleb states, “I think my music blends classic R&B harmonies and vocal arrangements with trendy hip hop beats and rhythms. People tell me I sound like Brian McKnight mixed with Usher’s sense of style and sex appeal.” Indeed Caleb succeeds at showcasing his vocal talents in every song as well as getting the ladies hot with his exotic sex appeal with every performance. Adding to his ability to entertain is his knowledge of not only writing a song but also understanding the technical side of delivering outstanding vocal arrangements in the recording studio. Elaborating on his recording studio savvy, Caleb states “a lot of producers call me to sing backup vocals all the time, because they know I can capture the true feeling of the writer’s song. While at Windswept, my main goal was to try and outshine the lead vocalist on the song!” Since dedicating himself full-time to his solo career, Caleb looks to outshine his peers by mixing classic R&B vibes with today’s edgy hip hop flavors. “That’s where music industry is going. Everybody is taking music back so that we can move forward. You see it all the time now – especially in hip hop.” Caleb Simms definitely knows his music. Stay tuned, the game is about to change.
