Los Angeles Premiere of Herskovits at The Heart of BlacknessVital Pictures and California Newsreel are pleased to announce the upcoming Los Angeles premiere of Herskovits at The Heart of Blackness
"An important documentary that should be required viewing for students of American intellectual history." Using photomontage recreations, interviews, animation, original field footage and recordings, Herskovits at the Heart of Blackness examines the forgotten legacy of Melville J. Herskovits, the pioneering Jewish American anthropologist scholar who established the first African Studies Center at an American university and authored the seminal book, The Myth of the Negro Past. More than a simple biography, the film explores the politics of race and anthropological research, the myth of “objective” scholarship, and the right of a people to represent themselves.
Tickets for the premiere can be purchased on the Hollywood Black Film Festival website. The screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Llew Smith and other commentators.
For more information about the film, or to purchase a DVD, visit California Newsreel. The film will broadcast in the 2009 – 2010 season of the Emmy® Award–Winning PBS Series Independent Lens. We invite you to share this message with your friends and colleagues and hope to see you at the screening!
