Los Angeles Premiere of Herskovits at The Heart of Blackness

Vital Pictures and California Newsreel are pleased to announce the upcoming Los Angeles premiere of Herskovits at The Heart of Blackness

Herskovits Postcard

"An important documentary that should be required viewing for students of American intellectual history."
— James Pritchett, Director, African Studies Center, Michigan State University

Using photomontage recreations, interviews, animation, original field footage and recordings, Herskovits at the Heart of Blackness examines the forgotten legacy of Melville J. Herskovits, the pioneering Jewish American anthropologist scholar who established the first African Studies Center at an American university and authored the seminal book, The Myth of the Negro Past. More than a simple biography, the film explores the politics of race and anthropological research, the myth of “objective” scholarship, and the right of a people to represent themselves.
