Calling Marvin is a versatile, high-energy rock quartet. Since their formation in 1998, they have played on the Mitch Albom Show on WJR three times, on Fox 2 News-Detroit, at the Arts, Beats, and Eats Festival in Pontiac on the Rock Stage every year since it started, and once on the National Stage in 2004 with bands including Bob Guinea, The Calling, The B-52s, and Sponge. They also took second place in the WRIF Battle to the Triangle in 2001, and won the Jackson County Fair Michigan Idol/Battle of the Bands in 2003. They have also released three original CDs, each of which received a nomination for the Detroit Music Awards' Rock Album of the Year: "Eye Sore" (1999), "Live at the Memphis Smoke" (2001), and "Twelve Spiders a Year" (2002). "Big White Van" (2006) was finally released on July 20 at 59 West in Highland!
Calling Marvin gladly plays original material, cover songs or a mix of the two. The band has performed between 40 and 70 shows each of the last five years at great venues including the Little River Casino in Manistee, the Red Dog Saloon and Hector and Jimmy's in Milford, The French Outpost on Mackinac Island, MoDoggie's in Fenton, Up Front and Company in Marquette, Savarino's in Hillsdale, The Riverwalk Ampitheater, the BLUEStage Club, The Crazy Cowboy, and Bella Notte in Jackson, 59 West in Highland, The White Lake Inn in White Lake, Grass Lake High School, Colin's house, and The Village Inn in Grass Lake, and the Hayloft Liquor Stand and the Emerald Theater in Mt. Clemens. The group was also invited to perform in Detroit for the State Theater's "Detroit Tigers Opening Day 2005 After-Party" and as part of the "Pre-Super Bowl Motown Winter Blast" that accompanied Super Bowl XL. Calling Marvin was also fortunate enough to be part of the Illitch family-owned SoupCan Music Record Label from late 2003 to mid 2005, when the label shut down so the Ilitch family could focus more on other little projects like the Detroit Tigers and Red Wings.
The members of Calling Marvin are all professional musicians outside of the band. Cole Garlak works as a musical director, singer, and guitarist for OGCC in Walled Lake. Mark Ross, drummer, and Dave Humphreys, guitarist, both teach between 0 and 20 students per week. Dan Bickel, bass player and vocalist, is the band director at Grass Lake Community Schools as well as a private lessons teacher to 15+ students per week on a pile of instruments.
Demos and Promos are available upon request; feel free to drop us a line and we will get back to you expediently. Calling Marvin is available for original gigs, weddings, parties, any occasion you may need a band. Our forte in cover songs is mainly Classic Rock, but we have an extensive library of dance material, 80s,90s, Motown, R&B, Funk, Jazz, and Blues.
