THIS IS NOT A BAND PROFILE, WE ARE A COALITION DEDICATED TO BOOKING, PROMOTING, AND PUBLICIZING PUNK AND SKA SHOWS AND EVENTS. We used to run the THE SHED but are now working out of CASTLEMANIA. WE WORK THROUGH LOCAL BANDS, BEFORE CONTACTING US ABOUT A SHOW PLEASE HAVE A LOCAL BAND TO HOST YOU.

For those of you who have been checking out new releases this summer, it’s likely that you’ve heard of Lipona. With their recent Urbi Et Orbi demo and their relentless shows and touring, you’d have to be a hermit not to see the impact they’ve had on Tallahassee and the North Florida punk scene. With a style compared to A Wilhem Scream and Rise Against, the four-piece band chugs out their first EP Atlas. Recorded at Earthsound Studios with Lee Dyess at the helm (Earthsound recently finished Hopesick’s new full length amidst new projects coming from Fat Records), the production and recording quality is outstanding – from what we’ve seen so far from Dyess, this seems to be the standard out at Earthsound. Lipona isn’t trying to break ground, but they do in their own right. With the ever-changing avant-garde of pseudo punk-whatever bands constantly in the revolving door of the music industry, it’s a relief to hear a band that just does what they do well. Progressive sequences, intricate breakdowns and contemplative vocals make this album well worth listening to. Lipona’s comparisons to Rise Against and A Wilhelm Scream are accurate only in so far that the band’s pensive proficiency gleams. It is faintly familiar without being branded and it is steadfast in passion, which is hard to find these days. The song Ron Mexico rips open with a hardcore frenzy before gliding melodically through frenzied sequences a la Fat Wreck. The track Only Silence is another song in contention for my favorite. It reminds me of a duke out between Slick Shoes and 88 Fingers Louie. The vocals are tentative while the rhythm is quick and absolute. I think the best part of this band is their ability to confidently rock a genre of punk that was arguably the best since punk started; early to mid 90’s. So if you don’t buy this C.D. you’re just a big fat doodie head!
