cal wilson's Comedian Bio
|
| Bio | Cal started her comedy career in New Zealand, winning the inaugural Billy T Award for up and coming comedians in 1997. In 2000 she was awarded Best Comedian by Metro Magazine.
As well as her live comedy, extensive corporate work, and regular festival shows, she also appeared in all 6 series of the comedy showcase "Pulp Comedy; " filming a comedy special "Cal Wilson and Co" with the Perrier Award Nominated "Flight of the Conchords.
Her NZ acting credits include the drama series Duggan, and "Street Legal," with a lead role in the feature film "Orphans and Angels."
Cal wrote for and voiced various comedy radio serials and had her own long running column in both "Cleo" and "She" magazines. She was also part of the award-winning writing team, on TV 1s popular comedy "Willy Nilly."
In 2001, she won Best Newcomer at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival for her stand up/character comedy show "Hell Kitty." She guested on "The Panel" in Australia, and was part of the weekly panel on the kiwi version of the show.
Cal defected to Australia in 2003, to take up a job performing and writing on Channel 10's "Skithouse."
Since then, she has appeared on "The Glasshouse," and "Rove Live," as well as acting in Channel 7's "Last Man Standing." She also pops up on the odd occasion on the ABC's music quiz show "Spicks and Specks," and Channel 10's "Thank God You're Here."
In 2004, she took her one-woman show "Jekyll and Bride," to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, to wide acclaim; and has appeared twice by invitation, at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival. Last year at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival she outed herself as an Aussie Rules fanatic, with her show "Up there, Cal Wilson." (Carn the Sailors!) (if you saw the show, you'll know what she means) (If you didn't, you'll just be confused)
Cal can now be heard every weekday from 4 - 6pm on Nova, on "The Akmal Show with Cal Wilson." | | Website | profiletalent.com.au | | TV Shows | "Thank God You're Here," "Spicks and Specks," "Rove Live," "Skithouse," MICF Gala," "Last Man Standing," "The Panel," "The Glasshouse," "Street Legal," "Pulp Comedy" Series 1-6, "The Panel" New Zealand. | | Films | Orphans and Angels |

cal wilson's Interests
|
| General | comedy, music, shiny things | | Music | Force fed a diet of brass bands, Gilbert and Sullivan, and bagpipe music as a child, I'll pretty much listen to anything except gangsta rap and the heavier metals. Boney M and ABBA were my first passionate loves (go easy on me, I was 4), but I've since moved on to Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, Elbow, Goldenhorse, The Arcade Fire, The Residents, Snakefinger, Robyn Hitchcock, The Brunettes, Eddi Reader, Goodshirt, P J Harvey, David Gray, Nick Cave, Corn Mo, Peter Plumleys Playroom, Bic Runga, Don McGlashan in all his forms, Jonathan Richman, They Might Be Giants, Oleg Kostrow, The Divine Comedy, Steriogram, Nitin Sawhney, Cake, The Tokey Tones, Ron Sexsmith, King Curly, Ben Folds, Jack L, Lisa Miller. | | Movies | Underground, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Fargo, Peewee's Big Adventure, The Frighteners, Three Amigos, LOTR (well come on, I wouldn't be a Kiwi otherwise) Sione's Wedding, The Castle, The Princess Bride, Charade, Some like it Hot, Brazil, Thank you for Smoking, and anything with William H Macy and John C Reilly in it. | | Television | The League of Gentlemen, Arrested Development, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Little Britain, Big Train, Sapphire and Steel, The Avengers, Love My Way, Footballers Wives, The Catherine Tate Show, Smack the Pony, Shooting Stars, Spicks and Specks, Thank God You're Here, The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin | | Books | I'll read anything. Although I do struggle with the racing pages in the paper (there's never much of a story, and it's always about ponies).
My first love was P.G. Wodehouse, and I'm still a sucker for him.
I love a good bio (or even a salacious, evil one), and for some reason I'm a bandit for the history of european royalty (maybe it's because I am Anastacia) (not the singy one). I'm out and proud as a a fan of Steven King, and I love a good horror story, Clive Barker's 'Weaveworld' is a favourite.
I'll read anything by Isabel Allende, Terry Pratchett and Ian Rankin, and I love anything by or about the Mitfords. Kaz Cooke's books are always brilliant, funny AND useful.
Books I've read 80 million times: 'Perfume' by Patrick Susskind, 'The Lovely Bones' by Alice Sebold, 'Birdy' by William Wharton, 'Geek Love' by Katherine Dunn. 'True Story' by Bill Maher, 'Behind the Scenes at the Museum,' by Kate Atkinson.
I'll think of more I expect - I clearly need to up my highbrow quotient. |

cal wilson's Blurbs |
About me:
Hiya, Im Cal. Though I now live in Australia, I was born and bred in New Zealand, which I guess makes me the Phar Lap of Aussie comedy. Although hopefully not as covered in coarse hair.
At the moment you Aussies can keep an ear out for me on Nova, weekdays 4-6m on "the Akmal Show with Cal Wilson" (sure, it's a long winded title, but then so are we). TGYH bits of me are up on youtube (I'd put them on here, but that requires a technological aptitude that I just don't posses). People flying Air New Zealand can find me sounding just a bit too excited on the kids channel. Probably of more interest to the under sevens, that one - not that they're big into MySpace - although no doubt Fisher Price will be bringing out My First MySpace any moment now. But I digress.
Comedy bio to the left, jokers to the right, here I am, stuck in the middle with you. Or words to that effect. Blogs less common these days, given I have an actual job that happens every day. Bear with me, there will be more waffle. (Perhaps even with syrup)
Upcoming live gigs are up there at the top, but you already figured that out.
