MIKE Calzone (formerly Mike Calhoun, a founding member of the Dazz Band) has decided to take his talents into a very different direction.....ROCK! Change can sometimes be a good thing. His cover of his new CD, In Blue, is attractive but it does not come close to reflect the gift that is inside.
In Blue is an eclectic project with elements of rock, funk, rap, jazz and blues, and even a few gospel licks that give tribute to his spiritual roots. On Side One is Old School/Soul School, with a taste of Aerosmith rock on "Do Ya," a Randy Crawford style ballad on "To Love You," Norman Brown jazz on "Thang For You," and B.B. King blues on "Pain," and "Killer Blues." These two blues cuts in particular, spotlight Calzone's excellent guitar playing. Side Two, on the other hand, is New School/Rock School, heavily rock influenced, with a few Latin and gospel pieces. It is particularly strong, showing Calzone's versatility and songwriting skill. "Ghetto Preacher" is a great conscious rap with early Tupac style, while "Undone" and "Friday Night" are rocking Aerosmith & Journey. Further variety is shown in the Alabama-like "Back Home," while "Fear No Evil" shows a Santana influence.
In Blue is a fine album and display of Calzone's skill as both a musician and songwriter. Recommended.

This song is called "Fear No Evil." It was written by Mike Calzone, legendary guitarist and original member and co-founder of the Grammy Award winning, Kinsman-Dazz Band, and was recorded and mixed by Phatty Banks, Cleveland's premier R&B/ Hip-Hop producer. It is our first collaboration but by no means our last.
Mike has just released his own CD, "Calzone In Blue," and is working on a gospel album to be released sometime in 2008. Among his many artistic achievements, he has also mentored and recorded with the up and coming artist, Ghetto Wisdom, who will also be releasing a hard hitting, full length CD in the coming yearzzzzzzzzzMasthead Banner Made with MyBannerMaker.com! Mike Calzone - "In Blue"*****
(Black American Standard Music)
BOB DAVIS, soul-patrol.com
As a card carrying member of the Black Rock Coalition this album was the
last thing I expected from Mike Calzone, the former guitarist of the
classic 70's - 80's disco/funk Dazz band. First of all, this album is
organized like an LP, it's got a "side one" and a "side two". Side "one"
is called "old school/soul school and sounds like a combination of
STAX/TK Records/Ohio Players with just a touch of blues, disco, slow
jams & funk. Side "two" is called "new school/rock school" and it sounds
like Living Colour meets Whoodini meets Journey meets the Eagles meets
Santana. If all of this sounds like a "mess", it isn't. In fact it all
sounds quite visionary and diverse to my ears and contains many standout
tunes representing many different musical styles that fall under the
umbrella of Black music. Mike Calzone has a vision for Black music that
is not unlike that of Soul-Patrol.com itself. He understands that Black
music isn't what "they" say it's supposed to be, it's what "we" say it
is. That is an unusual and courageous perspective to take in the "cookie
cutter world of 2007". However it is the correct perspective to take if
one wants to create a timeless collection of music that will stand on
it's own artistic value many years from now, instead of being used as a
coaster (or worse yet an actual "cookie cutter"). This album is highly
recommended.zzzzzzz
