  • Bio

The Camelia Latinjazz group is the product of Roderick Camelia's fancy. He wanted to create a group that had the best parts of both worlds: the latin rhythms of the latino styles, and the soloings of the jazz styles. The result is what he calls: merenguejazz, salsajazz, cumbiajazz, bachatajazz and bolerojazz. Additionally, he wanted to keep the rhythms "danceable" so that anyone who was in the mood for latin dancing could get up and do it, which is why he kept percussion solos to a minimum. You can hear and watch some live samples of the results on www.youtube.com/rcamelia.
  • Members

On keyboard mostly Mina Cho, Mihoko Abe, Soohee Moon and Brad Smith. On percussion mostly: Ruben Vazquez, Amado Rodriguez and Miguel Guzman. I myself (Roderick Camelia) have been playing mostly spanish-electric (nylon stringed) guitar.
  • Influences

JAZZ: George Benson, Django Reinhardt & Wes Montgomery. LATIN: Carlos Santana, Paquito De Rivera, Arturo Sandoval, Andy Narell and others.
  • Sounds Like

The Camelia Latinjazz ensemble has added jazz improvisation not only to the salsa rhythm (which is more common), but also to the merengue, cumbia, bachata and bolero, creating this way what they call: salsajazz, merenguejazz, cumbiajazz, bachatajazz and bolerojazz. And despite the jazz solos the rhythms have been kept "danceable" to add another layer of enjoyment for those who likes to dance to latin rhythms. See for yourself at www.youtube.com/rcamelia. A Description Of The Band.

The CAMELIA LATINJAZZ BAND can be best described as: Latin rhythms with jazz solos, and is a Boston-based group. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The group has added jazz improvisation not only to the salsa rhythm (which is more common), but also to the merengue, cumbia, bachata and bolero, creating this way what could best be called: salsajazz, merenguejazz, cumbiajazz, bachatajazz and bolerojazz. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The bolerojazz and bachatajazz are used predminantly when a more mellow type of atmosphere is needed or wanted (for example as background music), while for more upbeat occasions the salsajazz and merenguejazz are preferred. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The group exists as a trio 3-piece), quartet (4-piece), quintet (5-piece) and sextet (6-piece). For background music the 3-piece is favored while the 6-piece is normally reserved for festivals and concerts. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The instrumentation of the trio consists of: spanish-electric guitar, keyboard (who also does the bass) and 1 hand-percussion (congas or bongos or tambora, etc..), and for larger ensembles more percussion and a separate bass are added. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The repertoire consists exclusively of Latino and American cover songs, but played with Latin rhythms, to stay within the latinjazz style and to make them more interesting, special and unique. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Roderick Camelia is a native of Curaçao, in the Caribbean, and is also a graduate of the Berklee School of Music in Boston. He plays lead guitar within the group, as well as serving as musical director. Roderick is the son of the late Juan Camelia, a well-known musician from Curaçao, and so his broad knowledge of Latin and Caribbean music comes to him from within his family. The other players in the ensemble are also professional musicians who bring their own talent and expertise to the group’s unique musical mixture. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The Camelia Latinjazz Band performs regularly for private events at function halls, country clubs, hotels, schools, etc., and less frequently at public restaurants, lounges, bar rooms, and others. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- To listen to and watch live samples of the trio, quartet, quintet and sextet, please go to www.myspace.com/camelialatinband or www.youtube.com/rcamelia and scroll down. These music samples were purposely created from "live recordings" (meaning: from recordings done without computerized corrections), with all the background chats, noises and imperfections of a live performance, so you get to experience the group in a real "live" setting: “what you hear is what you'll get”.

A Music Biography Of Roderick Camelia.

Roderick Camelia is the son of the late Juan Camelia, a very well known musician from the island of Curaçao, Dutch Antilles. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- After he finished in Curaçao what would be best translated as “pre-university”, he chose to study Music Pedagogy at the “National Pedagogic University” in Bogota, Colombia, and obtained a “licentiate degree” in Music Pedagogy (Music Education). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upon completing studies there he came to Boston, Massachusetts, in the USA to enroll at the prestigious Berklee College of Music and graduated in Professional Music. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He has performed, as a guitar and bass player, many different styles of popular music, including: swing, rock, funk, pop, latin-jazz, bossa nova, samba, salsa, merengue, bachata, cumbia, bolero, ballads, soukous from Congo, West-african rhythms from Senegal and Mali, soca, calypso, reggae, jonkonu from the Bahamas and the different rhythms from Curaçao, like the tumba, sehu, salsa antiyana, etc. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- An incomplete roster of groups he has performed with are: Fire, Smoke and Ashes (rock & funk), La Nueva Era (merengue), Supercombo La fuente (cumbia), Souvenir (calypso), Jorge Arce and his group Humano (salsa), The Jazz Trio (swing), Vox Pop (polyphonic poetry), Bala Tounkara (west-african music) and of course his own Camelia Latinjazz group. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He has recorded with Ramiro Mendez (cape verdian music), Grupo Chévere (merengue and bachata), Rumbafrica (soukous), Sali Oyugi (Kenyan music), Mondo Sweetie (Cuban and Spanish rumba flamenca) and The Three Kings (hip hop). ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Currently he’s performing with Rumbafrica (soukous) and his own Camelia Latinjazz Band. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- He is currently also writing two (or three) music books for the understanding of popular (non-classical) music in English and Spanish. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Additionally, he also has several compositions ready in a style he calls “tumbajazz” which is a fusion of tumba (one of the rhythms of his native island Curaçao) and jazz improvisation. He will soon be doing some recordings in this style.
