The first track that musically inspired me was Michael Jackson's Thriller. The video scared the hell out of me as a kid but the groove got my 7 year old ass shakin so he became my first music hero. After that there was a bit of a gap before I became really into any scenes. Into my teens I tended to latch onto my older brothers tunage a lot, which included bands like The Stone Roses, Pixies, The Cure and various alternative rock and punk bands. The first big gig I went to was to see Sonic Youth with Pavement in support when I was 15. I was totally blown away! From that point onwards I spent a lot of time going to local gigs, supporting my brothers band, and growing my hair so I could mosh with the best of em.
The turning point came when I befriended a group of older lads with a passion for quality dance and electronic music. It was around this time that my good friend Chris invested in the now classic Akai S950 sampler and an Atari ST computer for sequencing. When he demonstrated the concepts of sampling and how to layer up sounds to create tracks I was totally smitten. The ability to utilize every imaginable sound in a composition appealed as much then as it does now. It was also around this time that another circle of friends were getting down to the best in Hip Hop, Funk, and 60's and 70's music, so my taste became really eclectic and rounded. Over the years my appreciation for the chilled out after club sound grew along with my DJing and production skills, and I now find that musicianship, production and vibe are all essential ingredients to the music that I love.
