trailer for capoeira film, footage with some shots of my mestre & grand-mestre in bahia brazil.
its time to really focus on getting back to some roots. i will be hosting a capoeira angola study group really soon.
for those that may not know- capeira angola is a folk art/dance/game that was created by displaced africans captured and taken hostage by european conquistadores and made their slaves. the displaced africans created a dance/activity/game that gave them a space to practice self defense, singing, dancing, giving praise to our creator, crafting, discipline, self worth, respect, socializing, excersize, storytelling, & spiritual identity.
this space was created and celebrated in the form of a circle called a 'roda.' in the roda two dancers played a gymnastic-like dance-game comparable to a physical game of chess. the dancers would try to out maneuver each other & knock their dance-partner off balance- either out of the circle or off of their feet/hands/head, all without touching each other.
the roda was surrounded by other dancers & players watching, singing, & interactivly playing their handmade instruments. at the head of the roda was the 'bateria' or orchestra, which guided the dance game. the lead of the bateria would sing a 'call and response' song that would change as the dynamics of the two dancers would change, and the songs themselves told stories and taught lessons. the songs were about survival, about animals, about the jungle, about masters, gods, and about passing down the old knowledge.
this was all done in a way that the 'slave owner/master' dismissed as a silly dance. all this was done do survive an ugly life-threatening situation. all this was done to excersize & keep the flock strong & healthy. all this was done to keep the flock alert & knowledgable of how to respond in a physically threatening situation. all this was done to give thanks to god. all this was done to keep the flock together. the whole flock played together, the elders with the youth, the youth with the adults. the youth listened, respected, & learned from the elders. the youth took care of their elders. all this was done to survive. all this was done with care & perseverance. all this was done to pass the time. all this was done to become free... one way or another...
