Interests
General
I am a wild and crazy guy who spends more time on rivers than in cities, and more nights under the stars than under a roof. I work as a web designer and river guide so that I can combine my artistic interests with my recreational interests. Photography is an avocation of mine, and I have an undying love of great music.Music
Bach to Zappa, and almost everything in between. I love jazz, rock, blues, R&B, classical, reggae, bosa nova, samba, folk and Americana equally. I am a former professional musidican, artist manager, concert promoter and audio/recording engineer, and am avid golfer and whitewater canoeist/river guide.Movies
The Right Stuff, Close Encounters (unedited version), Dances with Wolves, All the President's Men, Bourne Trilogy, all Tom Clancy books made into movies, Riley: Ace of Spies, JFK, The Big Lebowski, Blake Edwards' S.O.B., History of the World (Part One), Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and many more of that ilk.Television
Books
History, civics, biographies of successful people, aything by Tom Clancy, Mario Puzo, John Steinbeck, Ayn Rand, George Orwell, and all the great classical writers.Heroes
Alan Shepard, Scott Carpenter, Gordon Cooper, Deke Slayton, Bob Crippen, John Young and every other astronaut that took our world farther than we could ever have imagined. Those who developed the technologies for these accomplishments, but who are not publicly known, as also my heroes.

About me:
I was born at a very young age, and have gotten a little older ever since, though I have not truly "grown up" in the eyes of some people who know me. Life is an experience and an experiment - some people march to a different drummer, but I march to a whole different band. In the immortal words of the poet Robert Frost, "...Two roads diverged in a wood, and I — I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference." In 1965, I had a high school band called "The Extortions" (I intended to pursue a career in law, and liked that name) with three guys from our jazz band - Don Sperry (lead guitar), Gary Forsythe (drums) and Jon McIver (electric bass). I played guitar and was the lead vocalist. We covered mostly Rolling Stones and an assortment of other early British bands, as well as some blues and R&B stuff. In 1968, I went to San Francisco, and in 1969 formed "Licorice Tadpole", a psychedelic blues band that toured as an opening act for the likes of Jefferson Airplane and The Doors. I trained with Ted Jordan, SMU's classical guitar professor, in the early 70's, and when we were not playing Bach we were doing gigs together playing Hot Tuna and other similar music. I also spent a couple of years playing with Dean Cardwell as an acoustic duo performing Scottish, Welsh, English and Irish pub drinking songs in the Jolly Ox Pubs at Steak & Ale Restaurants in the Dallas area. I have been a Jack of many trades, and some would say a master of none, but I have mastered the art of living, and that is what really matters most to me. Starting my adult life as a professional musician, composer, artist manager and concert promoter, I eventually went back to college and obtained a double degree in electrical engineering and aviation electrical engineering, and then went to work as a field engineer on IBM Systems 3x mini computer systems and peripherals. Eventually, I made my way into the world of the personal computer as a user, then as a sales rep and finally as a technician building, repairing, installing and maintaining PCs and PC networks. In 1996, I began teaching myself html and became a web designer, leaving behind the hardware and software world that had gotten to the point of being a commodity with little chance for a decent living wage. I work as a web designer today when not guiding river trips for friends and clients. In 1975, I began canoeing rivers, and in the mid-1980's started canoeing whitewater rivers. Today, I am as likely to be found on a remote, wilderness river or dropping over a dam or waterfall as I am designing websites - I have paddled more than 1,000 miles per year for 12 of the last 13 years, and am always in search of another river to explore. And so the journey continues from the cradle to the grave, which I hope is still a few years away.Marc's Choice playlist by Canoeman
