自我介紹

關於我:

Paris Review Interviews vol. 4 Seeing Things

Since October 1994, when we became independent again following a management buyout, Canongate Books has emerged as one of the most dynamic publishing houses in Britain. Based in Edinburgh but with a distinctly international outlook, Canongate continues to nurture and publish new talent from around the world, whilst retaining the essence of the Scottish Canon.

We have no specific agenda other than to promote and publish challenging, quality work from as broad a perspective as we are able. The diversity of the list is something that should be evident from our site and we hope that you enjoy spending time on it. As multi-national conglomerates increasingly dominate the publishing world, the net offers an important medium for independent houses.

    Thank-you

    Dear Canongate,

Thank you for joining me at my new MySpace site, FINISHING TOUCHES MARY (http://www. myspace. com/finishing_touches_mary).

Having you with me is indeed a pleasure.

Since time immortal, humans have found various ways to communicate. With the advent of writing, civilization as a whole has grown and expanded in knowledge. If it were not for the written word, we would know so little of the various cultures before us, and it is imperative that we too, leave our ‘footprint in the sand’ of history today, enabling future generations to know and understand us.

I do hope you and your friends will visit me at my site, where I feature some of the most celebrated, avante garde artists, producers, and writers of the 20th and 21st centuries.

So please ensure you peruse some of our forthcoming videos, blogs and bulletins, as I am certain you will be poised to endorse them as well.

    All my personal best,

    Mary

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this lay/poem-come-song on myspace.com/walkaboutsverse -

2 of 230, walkaboutsverse.741.com: WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
    From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
    With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

    I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
    Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.

    Request or question, I don’t know -
    Assured voices, elderly men.

    That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

After you've finished here, you may wish to hear this, on myspace -

230 of 230, walkaboutsverse.741.com: AS GOSPELLERS HAVE SAID/CHRISTMAS SUNG SIMPLY

    As gospellers have said,
    Beneath signalling skies,
    On land dusty to tread,
    A trough in a stable
    Was the strawy first-bed
    Of a divine baby -
    The forgiving Godhead.

A season for new hope -
    There then and here now;
    The yuletide of goodwill -
    There then and here now.

    In respect of this chance,
    Beneath bright or dark skies,
Faith’s the star that we glance
    Attending Christ’s churches
    And trying to enhance,
    With singing and ritual,
    Our God-loving stance.

    That pigeon over there,
    there, with the
    claw and rank
    mangled stump,
    rooty little stump,
    gnarled like a tiny tree,
    in it lives two crocodiles,
    long as your thumb nail.

Of course they live in trees, crocodile trees
    idiot.

    Gnarly tree stump
    hollow, flying over
    Edinburgh on the
    belly of a
    rabid pigeon.

    See it, over there,
no there in the MacD wrapper,
    oozy yellow pus eye,
    red shot in the centre
    half mohawk slicked up
    he's coming closer,
    fuck, aw fuck,
    he's waggling
    that stump
    at you.

    'Fly away freak or
I'll kick your head right off'

'I know all about you' says the pigeon.

    'I fucking bet you do'
