Participate in an historic citizen lobbying effort to create a U.S. Department of Peace. There is currently a bill before the U.S. House of Representatives (HR 808). This landmark measure will augment our current problem-solving options, providing practical, nonviolent solutions to the problems of domestic and international conflict.
Domestically, the Department of Peace will develop policies and allocate resources to effectively reduce the levels of domestic and gang violence, child abuse, and various other forms of societal discord. Internationally, the Department will advise the President and Congress on the most sophisticated ideas and techniques regarding peace-creation among nations.
RATIFICATION OF CEDAW TREATY AND PROMOTION OF LOCAL CEDAWS
2002
WHEREAS, the United Nations Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW) is the only international agreement that comprehensively addresses the full equality of women in all areas; and
WHEREAS, CEDAW was signed by President Jimmy Carter in 1980 but still has not been ratified by the United States because the Senate has failed to act, leaving this country alone in this position among industrialized countries and in the company of Afghanistan, Iran, and Somalia; and
WHEREAS, ratification of CEDAW and full implementation of its principles without any limiting "reservations, declarations and understandings" will improve the economic status of women, make progress toward the elimination of violence against women, and advance the equal treatment of women in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the city of San Francisco has adopted an ordinance patterned after CEDAW that commits the city to "work toward integrating gender equity and human rights principles into all of its operations, including policy, program and budgetary decision-making," and similar efforts are underway in other cities; and
WHEREAS, the composition of the U. S. Senate Foreign Relations committee has changed;
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the National Organization for Women (NOW) continue to urge the United States Senate to immediately act to ratify CEDAW and implement its principles without limiting reservations, declarations, and understandings; and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that NOW chapters be urged to renew efforts to schedule meetings with their senators while they are in their home states to encourage those senators to support ratification of CEDAW; and
BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED, that NOW take additional steps to encourage chapter efforts to promote the enactment of local CEDAW-type ordinances and that the National Action Center make information about local CEDAWs available to interested chapters.

California NOW Peace and Safety's Blurbs |
About me:
<
RESOLUTION TO ESTABLISH A PEACE AND SAFETY COMMITTEE adopted August 19, 2007 at the CA NOW State Board Meeting
Whereas, ending the War in Iraq is perceived to be the number one issue in the nation, and
Whereas, in 2004 National NOW indorsed the Peace Alliance's campaign to create a U.S. Department of Peace and Nonviolence now HR 808, and
Whereas, an ad hoc tack force grew out of the National NOW conference, Detroit MI, July 14, 2007 workshop on Women and War: Building a Feminist Peace Agenda
Now, Therefore be it resolved that CA NOW form a Peace and Safety committee to contribute to creating a Feminist Peace Agenda and address violence against women problems in California.
************The men and women of California's National Organization for Women (CANOW) and the members of our mother organization, NOW, have taken a position against the war in Iraq and warfare in general. We understand how national and international conflict adversely affects people and we know that the negative impacts of violence affect women and children disproportionately in society. When we raise our boys and girls in a culture that condones vilence and is compliant or acquiescent in the face of violent acts, we raise future perpetrators of violence and future victims. The cycle of violence has to stop; stopping the cycle has to start with us; we have to start now.
****************
We believe it is the right of all women and girls that they feel safe and are safe: in their homes, in their relationships, in their schools, in their work place, in their community, in their state, in their country and in society.
****************
The California NOW Peace and Safety Commitee is dedicated to peace actions and ending violence against women. We would love to network with other peace groups up and down the state of California. We have chapters in your area who are willing to collaborate on projects or help plan actions in your community. We would love to get to know our fellow peace activists. Please sign on to be our friend and join us in this important mission. Please send us a message telling us a little bit about yourself and/or your groups and projects.
