About me:
This 34th Pride celebration in our Nation’s Capital will run for ten days – starting on Friday, June 5, and culminating on Sunday, June 14, with our annual Street Festival on Pennsylvania Avenue in view of the Capitol.
June 1969 is recognized as the birth of the modern gay rights movement because of the courageous actions at the Stonewall Inn Riots by a small group of people who would not be silenced any longer. Our theme this year, “Generations of Pride: Celebrate and Remember - Stonewall at 40,” acknowledges our past, rejoices in our shared experiences through the years and into the present, and anticipates a bright future ahead for the GLBT community.
This year, Capital Pride is being produced for the first time by the Capital Pride Alliance, Inc., an independent organization whose sole purpose is to present the Pride celebration in the National Capital area. We thank Whitman-Walker Clinic for their many years of stewardship in guiding Capital Pride.

Despite the nation’s economic woes, the spirit of Pride remains strong, particularly in light of the recent marriage news in Iowa and Vermont and the commemoration of the 40-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots of 1969.
Capital Pride Week is slated for June 5 to 14 and is under the leadership of Dyana Mason, the new executive director of Capital Pride Alliance. Mason, a lesbian, was formerly executive director of Equality Virginia. (Read More at http://www.washblade.com/2009/4-24/outindc/cover/14414.cfm)
Capital Pride is happy to announce that for the second year in a row the Capital Pride Parade has been voted DC’s Best Parade by the Washington City Paper. The City Paper’s readers poll, with more than 30,000 online votes, voted the Capital Pride Parade number one over the 2009 Inauguration Parade and the Drag Queen High Heel Race.
The 2009 Capital Pride Parade is scheduled for Saturday, June 13th, 2009 at 6:30pm and contingent registration and sponsorship is now open. This year’s theme for Capital Pride’s 10 days of events is: Generations of Pride: Celebrate & Remember - Stonewall at 40.
Capital Pride also welcomes individuals who are interested in volunteering for the parade or the festival. Volunteers can sign up directly on the website at www.capitalpride.org.
