The Captain Cook Festival stage a number of annual events along the North Yorkshire Coast:in the beautiful and historic sea port of Whitby , the picturesque fishing village of Staithes and in Middlesbrough.
The annual Shanty Weekend is now held each October , as part of the Captain Cook Birthday celebrations when we hold a Maritime Folk Weekend in Staithes . In 2008 we run for two days : Oct 25 and 26th.
The festival was founded in 1996 by folk artiste Richard Grainger (www.myspace.com/richardgrainger) and has seen many changes in the intervening ten years.As Richard dedicates even more time to touring and recording,he is now supported by a small but willing team of experienced individuals who undertake most administrative duties.
Sea Songs are an important part of British Folk Heritage and warrant , we think, a specialised event.
Work Songs, Shipwrecks, Battles, Pirates,Songs of Love, Heroism,Whalers,Local heroes - you'll experience it all here!
James Cook - the last of the great navigators- a son of this region is also celebrated through workshops, exhibitions and music.
You will hear the 'authentic' sound of Sea Shanties, and modern writers of sea songs, poetry of the sea, story tellers and childrens entertainers who perform alongside, traditional balladeers, dancers and instrumentalists.
The event is for everyone. Come along to one of our workshops,concerts, song sessons or singarounds.
Admission t this years event is free but please give generously when you see a collection tin or when taking part in one of our super raffles.
