關於 Captain of the Rant (Nudges, Whispers and Threats)
Ahoy hoy. I'm Captain of the Rant - known to friends and other people who knew me before I became Captain of the Rant as Paul Case. A blunt, intelligent and witty socially consious storyteller and performance poet, coming from the DIY punk scene because that's where pretty much all the really great, angry and heart (but not global) warming stuff happens. I think personal politics - with its passionate mess of flaws and contradictions - are the most geniune and it's that often massive gap between ideal and individual action that I want to explore with my work. My poems are like hardcore songs: short, sharp and to the point. My performances are gut-busting, ferocious readings without ever forgetting that a man jumping around like a monkey while trying to write seriously about politics and society is pretty funny in itself. I fucking love performing.
I'll play just about anywhere, so have a listen to my stuff and just drop me a line if you want to book me.
This is me performing my poem Battlecry of the Sexes at Belushi's in Camden:
All the poems up on my player are written and performed by me, but the music and production is all done by my wonderful partner-in-grime Hair Explosion
Here's some lovely stuff people have said about me:
"What particularly strikes you when listening to his work, along with his unshying honesty, is his ability to place personal experience in a wider social context. Brave enough to question his own thoughts and actions in a public domain he almost challenges the listener, in words accessible to all, as to their own accountability and responsibility" - Mudkiss Fanzine
"Very punk rock and down to earth" - Mild Peril Fanzine
"Excellent" - Urban 75
"Spewing stiff, rhythmic tyrades, he is a poet devoid of pretension. No one is performing poetry quite like him at the moment... a pillar of his scene" - Sam Russo
"Although it is poetry it in some ways transcends it... distinctive, confrontational. [The demo] has passion, rage and life!" - Nick Card
"Great stuff" - Neal Zetter
"Genius" - Dave Hughes
"Freaking brilliant" - The King Blues
"Highly recommended" - Dirty Ska & Punk Promotions
"Well on point... fucking fire" - The Ruby Kid
"Informative and fun" - Jarmean?
"Great stuff" - Al Baker
I also co-run and host a cracking night of acoustic punk, folk, ska, punk poetry and political stand up called OUT OF STEP. This can be found at http://www.myspace.com/outofstepmusicnight. It's been lovely running it, and we've been fortunate enough to host a massive variety of awesome acts all under the banner of diy culture.

cheers for the doggy poem comment - funnily enough I am doing it as a teen poem (with excluded kids) but leaving the `bitch' in and it's going down a treat. I think that's the best market for it as it is rather silly. Just gonna check out your other blog poem...
sorry mate - was just inviting you along - and now I feel guilty! Of course I only put on 4 shows a year max so need to shuffle the pack and try out new people and other established stars too, hence my email to you of the other day. But your time will come again of course. Check out the new poem - I think it's one of those totally stupid ones I do that you might like. When's your next one being written? Nx
hi captain of the rant how goes it?? Looks like ur getting ur political agitation out there! hope all goes well keep us informed on good conscious gigs! thanks
well 25 of them were my mates and Jack and Legs brought about a dozen. Each other act brought one or two and about ten off the streets/local ppl + the acts themselves. Jack and Legs are local so that helped. I had one main act who didn;t turn up or call or anything!! Good luck in Scottyland and look 4ward to the kilt pics. I have just got some work in Wiltshire - 4 performances next year - that's my longest trip. Nx
no prob at all - I know what it's like as a performer to get to other gigs. Went gr8 though - banged out - no seats left and 70 capacity hit so - meant I could give everyone (inc me!) a decent £30 + £10 for floors. How goes it with you anyway? Nx
hiya oh ranting one - well it's a cracking bill and be gr8 to see you there but i know it's always a busman's holiday when you perform yourself at gigs but be good to see you - but no offence taken if you can't make it. I am ok but looking forward to a quiet w/e as the poo really hits the fan with National Poetry Day next wk - big booking every day. Hey - why don't you perform and get the kids to do something at your work place - be a good opportunity for you to test it out? Hope you win the lottery anyway. Nx
am good ta - been busy now the schools are back after a self-imposed 3-wk summer break. Be good if you can make my 50th birthday gig - went for it instead of Ryan's Bar (remember we discussed that?) as it could be a regular venue for me if all goes well. Performed in Stoke Newington Lib two wks ago and worked in William Patten School in Church St this wk - nr you I presume? How are things with you? Work? Gigs? Writing? Nx
yeah will do man! i love discovering new music on myspace, problem is 99% of it is faux-paramore, synthetic american voiced little wanks with fringes talking about soda and sidewalks when they've never even set foot in america. truly, truly awful. but when you find something you like it becomes even more of a bonus cause of the countless profiles you have trudged through to get there! WELL PRODUCED?! REALLY?! aha, majority of stuuf is recorded on my mates 24 track with a plastic mic he got from argos for twenty quid and isn't even mixed?!?! yeah, a few tracks i mixed at college though and they came out pretty cool. yeah i'm lovin' the spoken word scene at the moment, it seems to be growing dramatically...thanks to pip and the satin lizard lounge podcasts;) take it easy man.
oh I'm good mate ta and refreshed mucho after hols. Have a new kids' poem, Mealtimemania - tho not on my site. Big performance tomorrow night in Hackney/Stoke N - if you're about - with Michael Rosen (the No 1 kids' poet) and Baden Prince Jnr. See my gig list. 7 for 7.30 start tho. Got two ideas in my head and it'll all kick off next wk now the schools are back. Watching Che Pt 2 tongiht after seeing pt 1 last week - was he your role model lol? Did you like my Tube rant poem btw on my player? Hope so and look 4ward to yr album! Nx
Hey man, My girlfriend met you in Europe a few weeks ago and showed me your stuff (Sophie). But apparently you're already in my friend list- small world eh?! Well anyway I just wanted to congratulate you on your poetry. It's brilliantly observational which in turn makes it hilarious! My personal favourite is 'Politics under the influence' and the nostalgia sets in...However in my previous experience it's been the lack of good company (not the over indulgence in alcohol) that has caused the conversation to take a turn for the worse. I have only attempted spoken word on one occassion and- due to my west country accent- failed!! But it's on my profile if you want to have a gander. It's called 'All the news that's not fit to sing'. Take it easy man, VP (or you can just call me Will...)
This bank holiday Sunday we’re playing the Carnival aftershow party at Ginglik, Shepherd’s Bush Green. It’s gonna be great! Come along and say hello.
Or, on Friday 4th September we’re playing at the very cool Born Bad night which is normally in Brighton but has made the trip up to London for a change. It’s at Barden’s Boudoir.
