CAPTAIN SEAHORSE
Forged in early 2005 in the musical crucible that is Bellingham, Washington, Captain Seahorse has been delighting audiences with their theatrical, danceable, and musically complex live performances, as well as challenging the inherent notion that bands should be obliged to define themselves based on a single stylistic genre ever since. The band strives to encompass all manner of their diverse musical influences in their repertoire. As a result they have developed a sound that plumbs the depths of funk, rock and afrobeat while including elements of traditional klezmer, old-time country and jazz, in a format consisting of primarily original music peppered with their own takes on classic songs from across the musical spectrum. They have played extensively in the Western Washington area, as well as venues across Oregon, and one special trip up to Nelson, British Columbia, to open for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band.
Begun as a four-piece ensemble (Tyler Clarke, guitar; Isaac Weiser, bass; Joe Miles, tenor saxophone; and Andrew Clarke, drums), Captain Seahorse has recently broadened their sound with the addition of Eli Jayson, keyboardist and alto sax player for the popular Northwest band Dig the Particulars, bringing new sonic possibilities to their music.
Captain Seahorse’s first album “Breathing in Saltwater,” was released in February 2006 to great acclaim, and the band released its second release in June 2007 titled, "Shooting the Pearls of Wisdom."
In addition to recording projects and straight-forward live shows, Captain Seahorse’s production company, Freakaphonic Productions, has been instrumental in building a scene in Northwest Washington dedicated to multi-media live performance and circus art. Prior Freakaphonic productions have resulted in highly anticipated, sold-out performances featuring acrobatics and aerialists, burlesque shows, jugglers, sketch comedy, and at least one on-stage poodle striptease.
