The
quality of her performance, the finesse of her playing, the sensitivity
with which she interprets works, charmed the public who listened to her
eagerly.

I
am a classically trained guitarist who has strayed from the high-brow path and found that life can be much more fun when you’re not being so stuffy! I also publish my own arrangements of folk songs for guitar, and transcribe and arrange music for others in all styles and instrumental combinations (see www.myspace.com/carlamariemusicarranging)
With
a piano teacher for a mother and an Italian family full of opera singers I
suppose it was inevitable that I would be drawn into music. I have dabbled
with many instruments to varying levels in the past
but my main love has always been the guitar, which I began
learning almost accidentally when one became available at school and
no-one else wanted a go!
Initially
taught by a totally inspiring local musician (Theo Rubin), and later by
Gordon Crosskey of the Royal Northern College of Music, I went on to study
with Charles Ramirez at the Royal College of Music, London, where I became
the first guitarist to graduate with the GRSM Honours degree, after which
I gained a Diploma in Music Teaching at the London University Institute of
Education.
Whilst
wearing many other hats, I have performed both as a solo classical
guitarist, and in many instrumental groups, throughout England
and abroad. Worth a mention are a classical guitar duet partnership which
ran for many years and a musical chamber group known as The
Divertimenti”, for whom I arranged much of the music.
However,
frustrated by the limitations of classical guitar repertoire and seduced
by beautiful melodies from other styles of music I found myself moving
away from classical conventions and have been exploring new territories, experimenting with various tunings,
incorporating a variety of unusual techniques into my playing, and
generally having a great time!
My
latest programs contain quite an eclectic mix of music, a blend of
classical refinement and hot Latin rhythms with haunting folk melodies and
driving banjo tunes, usually bringing something new to everyone!
