Carl Clements (saxophones/flutes/bamboo flute) received a BM in Jazz Composition and Arranging from the Berklee College of Music in 1987, an MFA in Jazz Performance from the California Institute of the Arts in 1990, and completed a year of study in the DMA program in World Music at the New England Conservatory. He has studied North Indian classical music on the bansuri (North Indian bamboo flute) since 1989 with Dave Philipson, Amiya Dasgupta, Steve Gorn, Devendra Murdeshwar, George Ruckert, Peter Row, and Nityanand Haldipur.
He has released four CDs with the eclectic jazz group Crosscurrent, and he is featured on numerous other recordings. His recently released CD of his original compositions for jazz quartet, entitled Forth and Back is available at www.cdbaby.com. He has performed at jazz festivals in Japan, Malaysia, Thailand, India, Dubai, and Boston, including performances with James Newton, Natraj, Divya, and Crosscurrent. During his frequent trips to India to study bansuri with Nityanand Haldipur, he has played with many of India's finest jazz musicians, including Adrian D'Souza, Karl Peters, Sanjay Divecha, Louis Banks, Rangit Barot, Amit Heri, Harmeet Manseta, and many others.
Currently living in New York, he is an active performer in the jazz and world music scenes, and is working on his dissertation for his PhD in ethnomusicology at the CUNY Graduate Center.
