I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes in November of 1988. It concerned me so much that I did basically nothing about it for almost 15 years.
In August of 2003, I was having issues with Diabetic Retinopathy, Diabetic Neuropathy, and sexual performance issues. I made the life-changing decision to begin my weight loss journey and dropped just over 25lbs. At almost 400lbs, it made a very small difference.
Toward the end of 2005, I was on twice daily Lantus insulin injections, twice daily Byetta injections, and Glucovance in an effort to control my blood sugar. I was still way out of compliance. However, in 2006, I caught the Fitness Religion. That year I lost 75lbs and got off all the medications, ending the year with a 5.7 A1c, a 144 cholesterol, and weighing 260lbs. The Retinopathy damage will never go away (I have some loss of vision), but all of the Neuropathy and sexual issues are gone and my blood sugar levels are perfectly normal.
Type 2 Diabetes is an epidemic disease in this country. It is most often a disease which seeks out the obese population. Obesity is epidemic. Both conditions are preventable and reversible.
