..FOR SHOW DATES, PLEASE GO TO .. CARLEYBAER.COM..!!! ......Order "YOU CAN'T CONTROL THE WEATHER" today!!!....Go ..HERE.., give it a listen, and buy a copy if you like it! ...... ..........**..Carley has a nifty little Q&A with ..Women Who Rock... Check it out!..**...... ......Donate today!.. .... ..Update:.. Carley's next project was going to be called ..Ordinary Stone... Then a string of calamities struck: the project was halted, the track list was scrapped, and the players disappeared. Faced with an even longer gap between albums, Carley took these setbacks in stride: she retooled the track list, re-enlisted players, and is AT THIS VERY MOMENT wrapping up recording on the new project..... In light of how unpredictable circumstances can be, the new title of the album, ..You Can't Control The Weather,.. serves as a reminder that sometimes things happen that are beyond one's control; it is up to each of us whether we want to get upset, or roll gracefully with whatever comes our way..... ***************************** .... Carley Baer is one of the DIY crowd's best-kept secrets. Ask anybody who's seen her perform, and they will tell you what a growing number of people are discovering: the smiley girl with the dreadlocks is good. With a voice that alternates between soft subtlety and brazen belting, and a songwriting style that is both clever and catchy, she leaves an impression that noticeably changes the paradigm of just what a girl with a guitar can do..... Growing up in Milwaukee, WI, Carley learned a lot about "playing well with others" during the campfire jams held by her parents and their friends. Musicians like Joni Mitchell, the Beatles, James Taylor, and Paul Simon would eventually inform her musical tastes. After high school, Carley tried to pick a direction in life, and soon realized that music was the only direction. Her unique blend of intelligent lyrics and folk-infused pop sensibilities garnered lavish praise from everyone who listened. She soon got involved with the Milwaukee chapter of Chick Singer Night, a venerable showcase which takes place monthly in cities across the United States, and has produced such illuminous alumni as Paula Cole, Norah Jones, and Sheryl Crow. Because of Carley's involvement with Milwaukee's CSN, she was asked to join the "Best Of" lineup on the Potawatomi Stage at Summerfest in 2006. In addition, she recorded her first solo album, the acoustic Still Life..... That year she also decided to pursue a change of pace, and relocated to Portland, OR, to see what its music scene had to offer. Since then, she has gigged steadily, making a name for herself around town as a songwriter who "could break up with you and make you enjoy it" (Kris Foster, The Sleeping Giant). As she established herself at such venues as the Hawthorne Theatre, Gotham Tavern, and McMenamins Edgefield, she began to cultivate an organic fanbase. That theme of sustainability also revealed itself in the way Carley has funded her most recent project: instead of relying on credit, she asked her fans to contribute to the project, and recorded *Spare Change as an incentive for donating. The project was a success and, in 2010, she simultaneously released You Can't Control The Weather and started her own label, Ursula Music. .... In the fall, she is looking forward to promoting her ideas about sustainability with a West Coast tour traveled exclusively by train and bike. In light of recent natural disasters, she believes that it is now more important than ever to live according to one's ideals, and she hopes that this trip will inspire others to consider alternative forms of transportation when they can. Whether sitting in the Observation car or pedaling to the next gig, Carley is certainly gaining momentum, and she invites everyone along for the ride..... 10 of 365MoreThanks for being friends with Fair Trade Music PDX! As you know, we're still gathering intelligence about how venues in town are treating their bands. So far, the story's not too good, but a few of them looks like they might be willing to man up and pay musicians some kind of guaranteed minimum wage - the kind that is the law for dishwashers, janitors, bartenders, and every other service worker in the club. Help us identify those venues! If you haven't already, please take a few minutes to complete our online survey. It’s completely anonymous, incredibly simple, and is essential to moving Fair Trade Music into the next level of venue implementation. The survey is at: http://fairtrademusicpdx.org/?q=node/275 It’s a cliché because it’s true – WE CAN’T DO THIS WITHOUT YOUR HELP! Thanks, and Solidarity, Fair Trade Music PDX
