It's like seeing double. Carli and Julie Kennedy are a Canadian powerhouse duo with a musical bond that only identical twins can share. Originally from the culturally active town of Powell River, Carli and Julie are known for their exceptional harmonies, fine musicality, and sincere songwriting style. At twenty-three years old, they are both graduates of the University of Victoria's Bachelor of Music performance program. From a young age, the Kennedys have been immersed in music from classical to country. With Carli on guitar and Julie on violin and bass guitar, they have developed a sound that is all their own: a fusion of their background in jazz, classical, celtic, and folk music. Featured in the Victoria Times Colonist in June 2008, the Kennedys have been described by reviewers, colleagues, and audiences alike as "fine players and truly communicative performers." An undeniably energetic duo, Carli and Julie's performances bring a mix of toe-tapping tunes and intimate, heartfelt songs to the stage. Their beautiful blend of voices and instrumentation offers a unique sound to audiences on the West Coast and beyond.
Performing as a trio with renowned drummer, Kelby MacNayr, Carli and Julie were most recently featured at the 2009 Victoria Jazz Fest International. They have also performed at events that include Victoria's Spirit of Summer in the Square Concert Series, Butchart Gardens Summer Entertainment, University of Victoria Legacy Awards, Hermann's Jazz Club's 28th Anniversary Celebration, and as onboard entertainment for BC Ferries. Carli and Julie Kennedy have also found success on the local and national music scene as instrumental and vocal soloists. Carli Kennedy was the 2007 National Guitar Class winner at the British Columbia Festival of the Performing Arts. She was also the Grand Award winner at the Greater Victoria Performing Arts Festival and the third prize winner in the guitar category at the 2007 Canadian National Music Festival. Julie Kennedy was the concertmaster of the 2007 National Youth Orchestra of Canada and was awarded the Stephen Sitarski Leadership Scholarship. In 2008, she was concertmaster of the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra. Currently, Julie plays as an extra musician with the Victoria Symphony and the highly acclaimed Galiano Ensemble of Victoria.
In October 2008, Carli and Julie released their recording debut of four original songs. As described in the Powell River Peak’s October 8, 2008 cover story, the Kennedys’ recording features “skilled musicianship and a sonorous vocal style. The voices, like the sisters, are in sync.” Their songs continue to receive airplay on CBC Radio 1, CFUV 101.9 FM, and 95.7 Sun FM. The Kennedys are currently planning a Christmas tour of Vancouver Island and the lower mainland of British Columbia. Their show will feature both creative arrangements of Christmas favourites as well as original holiday tunes. Listeners can look forward to a soft and pure vocal quality similar to that of mainstream artists Alison Krauss and Norah Jones. With a musical connection reminiscent of other family groups, such as Leahy and The Rankins, audiences can expect to fall in love with the music of Carli and Julie Kennedy.
