2005 no ha sido un año de transición, sino un año más en la reciente transición, continuada y sin mirar atrás apenas, de la música de club, y que puede resumirse en la palabra ‘minimal’, pero que en realidad no deja de ser otra palabra mucho más conocida por todos: ‘techno’. Tal como se intuía hace unos años, cuando empezaron a ser de uso común términos como ‘sonido Colonia’, ‘microhouse’ o ‘techno minimalista’, esta rama investigadora y preocupada por las texturas del techno había de ser el auténtico escenario de futuro, y después del gran empuje experimentado en el 2004 gracias sobre todo al papel fundamental jugado en tanto que catalizador por parte del sello Kompakt –tanto como distribuidora como editora–, este año que ya acabó ha sido el de la consolidación definitiva del minimal techno, o minimal funk, como la corriente dominante en los clubes de medio mundo –su despegue este verano en Ibiza en Circo Loco y las noches Cocoon en Amnesia han sido definitivas– y como la corriente con más ideas frescas sobre la mesa; también la que es capaz de integrar en su corpus de estilo influencias provenientes de otras áreas de la música de baile ajenas al circuito techno
En los años noventa, la música electrónica conquistó prácticamente todo el mundo. Desde varios países se incorporaron elementos nuevos, como es el caso del jungle inglés que se basa en ritmos complejos derivados de la música caribeña, o el trance que nacio al comienzo de esta decada en los clubes de Frankfurt Alemania, tambien el dub o el nortec, derivado de la música tradicional mexicana y la electrónica.
A finales de los años noventa, fueron naciendo nuevos géneros como el Tribal derivado de sonidos tribales y percusiones. También se popularizaron más géneros como el progressive y el deep house.
En la actualidad, la música electrónica está consolidada en todo el mundo, teniendo millones de seguidores que disfrutan con los sonidos creados por artistas que utilizan máquinas y computadoras.
Mezclas del estilo electro con el house generaron, a mediados de los ochenta, la música techno (en Detroit, Michigan, EE. UU.) y la house (en Chicago, Illinois).
La gran popularidad de la música electrónica llegó a fines de los años ochenta, cuando también en Europa productores y DJs empezaban a producir temas de techno y acid. Esta corriente estaba influenciada desde varias ramas del pop como la EBM y el electro pop de formaciones como Depeche Mode, lo que generó nuevas ramas dentro de la música electrónica, como el trance y el dance europeo.
El desarrollo del sonido techno en Detroit y la house music en Chicago desde principios a finales de los ochenta y el posterior movimiento británico de acid house de fines de los ochenta a principios de los noventa, todos empujaron el desarrollo y aceptación de la música electrónica e introdujeron la música dance en las discotecas. La composición electrónica puede crear ritmos más rápidos y más inhumanamente precisos que lo que se puede utilizando percusión tradicional. La música dance a veces presenta sonidos de instrumentos tradicionales y voces (samples o ‘muestras’) alterados electrónicamente.
El minimalismo es una corriente artística - presente en el diseño, la pintura y la música- que consiste en renunciar a los accesorios, concentrándose en la forma o la esencia de la obra. No es un movimiento completamente nuevo, pues sus raíces ya están en el modernismo.
En la música clásica existe un subgénero minimalista cuyos elementos son la repetición de breves frases musicales, énfasis en la armonía constante y en un ritmo continuo. Hoy en día, la música clásica minimalista es muy similar a las producciones electrónicas.
El llamado minimal techno surgió al comienzo de los 90 y se caracteriza por un sonido “glitch” (texturas de sonidos fragmentados), ritmo de 4/4 y repeticiones de loops y cambios sutiles. Se enfatiza además la superposición de capas de sonidos. Su estética en general se puede describir como minimalista, futurista, industrial y sofisticada. En los últimos años el género ha tenido una gran influencia en el techno y se ha fusionado con el microhouse. Goza de una popularidad creciente en clubs de varias ciudades de Alemania (donde la escena techno es muy activa), Barcelona, el norte de Italia, Gran Bretaña, y Finlandia.
