Brazilian guitarist Carlos Pontual's worldly mix of studio technology, live performance and soulful jazz references many a funky 1970's icon - Herbie Hancock, Sly Stone and Curtis Mayfield are all in the mix - but canny arrangements and subtle layering give them a contemporary twist.
Retro sounds and rhythms are prominent but, slightly distorted and meshed in with unsettling samples, which here give the airy Brazilian rhythms an extra urban bite. This is top quality club jazz.
