Wintertime. The snow fell over apartment roofs and neighborhood bars; we’d only be this young once. The sky had a reddish hue to it that made me feel warm and cozy inside despite the cold. I headed back to my apartment to get out my guitar and entertain friends ‘cuz it was time for another drunken sing-a-long. ///
I could already hear loud voices and laughter as I opened the door and headed to the kitchen where there was a crowd of people, some familiar faces and others not. I went into the kitchen with my guitar and someone requested a Sublime song. I started out with ‘What I Got’ –because I feel that ‘Lovin’, is what I got’ – and soon the kitchen erupted in song and everyone sang to their hearts content. I played for another hour without stopping and everyone kept singing with passion and joy. Someone in the kitchen crowd requested an original I’ve always felt proud of, ‘I Get Lost.’ Many of my friends were familiar with the song and often requested it because it was their favorite. We’d had plenty of nights like this some with snow and some with sun but this night embodied the electricity and wonder that comes from music. ///
I haven’t always been quick to realize it but it only took one snowy night for me and the distance of a few months to really see that playing music is the one thing I should do in this world. ///
