Carmen Gomes Inc. is a band of the highest musical integrity. Each of the musicians is young, enthusiastic and yet, experienced and sophisticated. Intuitive and technically talented, they are capable of interpretation as well as creation, crafting a solo or blending into the collective. In Carmen Gomes Inc. the whole exceeds the sum of its parts: 2 plus 2 is more than 4.
Let us take a closer look at Carmen Gomes. Carmen is the personification of the above qualities. She adds beauty to tremendous musicality. Whoever hears her perform might find it difficult to imagine that this is her real name rather than one assumed for artistic purposes. She embodies the juxtaposition present in all great music. She inherited the long, golden blond hair and the blue eyes from her mother, and the Mediterranean temper from her father. She writes sparkling lyrics and composes most of the songs.
Carmen won the first prize at the National Jazz Vocalist Concourse in 1994. She was granted the Singer of the Year Award in 1993, at the Concourse of Breda, where she and the band won the first prize as well. In the following years she had recording sessions with the Metropole Orchestra, performed at the North Sea Jazz Festival and played with Louis van Dijk, among others.
The interaction with her band is very fruitful. Folker Tettero (guitar) is a man of all trades. He mingles jazz, blues and funk into his own unique blend. He promises to be one of the leading jazz guitarists of his generation. He plays with the New Standard Trio and the band Headliners. Peter Bjornild (acoustic bass) is from Denmark. He used to be a classical bass player, but lost his heart to jazz. He has played with Ed Thigpen, Thad Jones and Bennie Wallace, among others. Marcel van Engelen (drums) has played with Mark Murphy, Lee Konitz and Toots Thielemans. He is to a large extent responsible for the rhythmic flexibility of this ensemble. The four musicians complement each other perfectly. They really sound like a harmonious group. Strong as soloists, yet continuously searching for unity, they are capable of picking up each musical theme and moulding it into the unique sound which is so typical of this band.
The music can be described as Soul Jazz with a Blues Flavour. The melodic jazzy sound gets a regular impulse of sometimes bluesy, and at other times funky elements. All this is presented on stage in a very soulful way. At these moments, Carmen can fascinate her audience and take them by the hand to tragic love affairs, majestic and stirring, or to daily happiness, intimate and intense. However, at other moments Carmen Gomes Inc. has the ability to swing, stomp and crackle. The ingredients are mixed in a way that creates a surprising new taste, just like a good cocktail.
