PRIMA PARTE: Anche se i Carmen Gray hanno firmato un contratto con la Sony/BMG soltanto un anno fa e pubblicheranno il loro album di debutto alla fine di quest'anno, il gruppo in sè esiste ormai da parecchio tempo. Tre dei suoi componenti, Lappe, JJ e Pete, suonano insieme ormai da dieci anni. In sintesi, prima che il gruppo diventasse Carmen Gray, si chiamavano Jerkem To Be Honest, ma non sono mai riusciti veramente a decidere il nome della band. Sapevano solamente che volevano un nome che non solo riflettesse il loro sound ma che desse anche giustizia al loro genio come musicisti. E alla fine, nel Maggio 2005, trovarono come nome Carmen Gray che, secondo tutti i componenti, catturava perfettamente lo spirito del gruppo. Ad ogni modo, è quasi impossibile dire quando le cose hanno cominciato a cambiare per i Carmen Gray, anche se è giusto dire che il 2000 è stato un anno di restart per la band. Fino a quel momento, l'idea era quella di divertirsi semplicemente con la musica e di uscire assieme. Comunque, con l'entrata nel gruppo di Nicklas Nyman come cantante, i Carmen Gray erano finalmente pronti a intraprendere la strada verso il professionismo. Fu anche il momento in cui Lappe si unì a Tommi Tikka nella stesura dei testi. Molti musicisti sono entrati a far parte del grupo nel corso degli anni ma mai nessuno in maniera duratura, in quanto i Carmen Gray non garantivano e procuravano una fama che fosse istantanea. Al contrario, si è sempre trattato di lavorare duramente. Per un lungo periodo, far parte del gruppo ha significato cercare di fare la miglior musica possibile con il peggior equipaggiamento possibile e investire denaro e fatica in tutto ciò che altre persone consideravano sogni e nient'altro. Il cambiamento più significativo nella lineup è avvenuto nel Gennaio 2003, quando O.J. è entrato a far parte del gruppo come batterista. E' stato subito 'amore a prima vista', nel senso che da subito con O.J. alla batteria, il sound del gruppo era il migliore di sempre. Finalmente, l'alchimia del gruppo era completa. D'un tratto, nessun pezzo del puzzle mancava. Ma ovviamente, il successo di qualunque band dipende sempre dalle giuste conoscenza e dai giusti agganci. E in questo caso, la persona giusta si rivelò essere Peter Kokljuschkin, un professionista con un lunga storia nell'ambito manageriale di gruppi pop/rock finlandesi. Peter scoprì la band nel Novembre del 2004. Non sarebbe un'esagerazione dire che il suo contributo è stato fondamentale nel portare la band ai livelli di oggi. Selvaggi, freschi, esaltanti, non si dice mai abbastanza delle selvagge performances live dei Carmen Gray e le loro accattivanti melodie rock. Certamente, se avete avuto la possibilità di beccarli live ad Helsinki o in tour In Finlandia, ne sarete già a conoscenza. Nel corso degli anni, i Carmen Gray sono riusciti a creare il loro sound, rock'n'roll, fresco ed esaltante. Le loro influenze musicali vanno dai Beatles agli Skid Row. Ancora adesso, sin dall'inizio, il loro scopo è sempre stato quello di creare qualcosa di nuovo piuttosto che restare legati ad una qualunque tradizione. Ma naturalmente, per la maggior parte di voi, la storia dei Carmen Gray è appena all'inizio. PART ONE: Even though Carmen Gray signed a recording contract with Sony/BMG only a year ago and will release their debut album later this year, the group itself has been around much longer than that. Three of its members, Lappe, JJ and Pete, have played together for a decade. To make a long story short, before the group became Carmen Gray, they were called Jerkem To be honest, they could never really decide upon what they wanted to be called. They only knew that they wanted a name that would not only reflect their sound but also do justice to their genius as musicians. And finally, in May 2005, they came up with Carmen Gray, which they all felt captured the spirit of the group perfectly. Although its next to impossible to pinpoint when things really started taking off for Carmen Gray, its fair to say that the year 2000 proved to be a watershed for the group. Up until then, the idea had been just to have fun with music and hang out together. However, with the inclusion of Nicklas Nyman as the lead vocalist, they were now finally ready to embark on a joint voyage towards becoming a professional act. It was also round about this time that Lappe joined forces with Tommi Tikka in the songwriting front. Since then, this songwriting team has been solely responsible for the groups material. Many a musician visited the group over the years some stayed longer than others did - but in the end, they all left because Carmen Gray was never about instant gratification. On the contrary, it was always about hard work. For a long time, being in the group meant trying to figure out how to make the best possible music with the worst possible equipment and investing everything that you had on your bank account in what most people considered little more than pipe dreams. The most current change within the lineup took place in January 2003, when O.J. joined in on the drums. Its fair to say that he was an instant fit, and it soon became apparent to everybody that with him behind the drum kit, the group sounded tighter and better than ever. At last, the chemistry of the group was completed. All of a sudden, there were no missing links. But of course, the success of any band is always dependent on the right people and the right connections. In this case, the right person turned out to be Peter Kokljuschkin, a seasoned professional with a long history in managing pop/rock groups in Finland. Peter discovered the band in November 2004. It wouldnt be an overstatement to say that his contribution was a major factor in getting the group where it is today. Wild, Fresh, Exciting Not enough can be said about Carmen Grays wild stage performances and their catchy rock melodies. Of course, if youve been lucky enough to catch them live either in Helsinki or elsewhere in Finland, you already know this. One things for sure, they continue to dazzle their audiences wherever they play. Through meticulous perfection of their craft, the Carmen Gray have, over the years, managed to create their own distinctive brand of rocknroll that sounds fresh and exciting. Their influences range from the Beatles to Skid Row. Yet, from the very beginning, their goal was always to create something new rather than be tied to any traditions. But naturally, to most of you out there, the story of Carmen Gray is just beginning.
