The first published review (folkforum.nl) of 'My Crescent City' gave it 9+
"a musical feast"

"Pippa Marland has a real autumn leaf of a voice...with a gorgeously rich depth of colour"
8/10 Hot Press

"beautiful, harmonious music" Songlines

"Whispers of Moving Hearts at their spacious, innovative best, as well as Van during his 'No Guru, No Method, No Teacher' period, infuse this quietly confident set piece. Vocalist Pippa Marland bestows a smoky, languid air to a gathering that boldly takes possession of the iconic 'Lord Franklin', and guest piper Diarmaid Moynihan bores deep beneath the surface of 'Twenty Three/In the Morning'. The pleasurable maturity of the playing and the sense of ego-free collaboration is a joy to visit and revisit."
The Ticket, Irish Times

"Their very name is a guarantor of the finest music from an eclectic group of musicians. Their latest offering lives up to all expectations"
**** Nottingham Evening Post

"Every once in a while, a band floats beneath the radar with a sound that's utterly their own - and a sharp intelligence that sets their music apart from the mainstream. Carmina have been busily building a loyal fan base with their glorious interplay of jazz and traditional/roots music for a few years now, fuelled by the smoky vocals and compositions of Pippa Marland and the guitar and mandola skills of Rob King. Their songbook stretches from musings on Chaos Theory and the Ku Klux Klanto more traditional subject matter of emigration, broken hearts and shipwrecks, and their Donal Lunny-produced album, 'My Crescent City', shows the pair hell-bent on cleaving to the outside track: always a more alluring place to be."
Siobhan Long The Irish Times (The Ticket) July 2008

Carmina

Founded by songwriters Rob King (acoustic guitar, mandola, bodhrán) and Pippa Marland (vocals, saxes, Irish whistles), Carmina’s music is original, soulful and sophisticated, drawing in Celtic traditional and contemporary strains blended with jazz improvisation. Although their sound has been compared with Moving Hearts, Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison, Carmina’s music is uniquely their own, yet highly accessible. Reviewers in the press worldwide have described their music as: ‘Powerful, original and enigmaticspellbindingspiritual...fresh, sophisticated and accessibleinspirational, vibrantmagical’.

Carmina first made their name touring Ireland and have since played major venues and festivals throughout the world. Appearances have included Glastonbury, Trowbridge, Belfast Folk, Cork Jazz, Marlborough Jazz, Edinburgh, Stainsby Folk, Galway Arts, Henley Arts, Port Fairy (Australia), Bruges International, Labadoux (Belgium), Zwolle (Holland). Their appearance at Stainsby Festival 2005 was chosen as one of the top five roots gigs of the year in the East Midlands by the Nottingham Evening Post.

Carmina have three other albums out currently, the most recent being Love Like Angels ( ‘A really great albumwonderfully moody and emotional’ Bath Evening Chronicle, Sept 2004). This follows on from 2003’s On a Quiet Street, recorded live in Ireland with sponsorship from Guinness (‘Gorgeously haunting’ Time Out.
They are also promoting the re-issue of their classic recording Weather in the Heart, also produced by Donal Lunny – which was celebrated by the press internationally as ‘One of the most lyrical, surprising and enriching albums of the Celtic world’ El Pais, and ‘mesmerising and bewitching’ Irish Times.
On its original release it was nominated in Ireland for two major awards: Hot Press Best Roots Album and IRMA Best Traditional Act.
The band have appeared on several compilation albums: a live version of ‘Beulah Mae’s Dream’ (from Love Like Angels) was included along with songs by artists such as Damian Rice and Eddi Reader on Galway Bay FM’s LP/CD Embraces, and ‘Bird of Paradise’ featured on the very successful Canadian compilation CD Celtic Mystique.
Concorde’ (from Weather in the Heart) was played by a special gathering of air traffic controllers at Heathrow Airport as the Concordes landed completing their last commercial flights on Oct 24th 2003. Pippa and Rob were also honored to be invited to perform ‘Danny Boy’ by the family of the song’s composer, Frederick E. Weatherly, at a special commemoration for him. Carmina have frequently appeared on radio and TV in the UK, Ireland, Spain, Belgium, Australia, and are currently receiving strong airplay in the US and Canada. Their songs have been recorded by other European artists and have also been used for TV programmes, most recently on GMTV and Points West (UK).

Poem 162 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
TEES TO TYNE: FIRST IMPRESSIONS - SUMMER 2001

Where traditions are not so rare;
    Sea, country and works scent the air;
A multitude of monuments,
    Planted tubs and patterned pavements.

The longish pedestrian malls;
    The remnants of defensive walls;
Historic buildings are a gauge
    Of the respect for heritage.

Wheat, rape and pines in the fields;
    Estuaries guarded by shields;
Long sandy beaches and wide scenes;
    Romantic-ruin go-betweens.

Rivers in parts licked by trees,
    Or fringed by boat clubs, wharfs, gantries,
And crossed by practical delights -
    Varied spans, forming pleasing sights.

Fine churches headed at Durham;
    Football kits ad infinitum;
Kept castles - one for study;
    Masonry behind masonry.

And, with moulding-works out that way,
It’s somewhere for a longer stay..?

Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse
(please see my blog):
WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN

Once drove an old sedan, up north,
From a place in Sydney to Cairns;
Then to Kuranda I went forth,
By train, to look without set plans.

I browsed through the trendy market,
With fresh fruits of tropical kind;
Walked to the creek through lush thicket -
Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.

I dined in a scenic cafe;
Then, outside, as I wrote for yen,
Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey,
You go walkabout with your pen.”

Request or question, I don’t know -
Assured voices, elderly men.
That’s now several years ago,
And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.

May 22 2009 6:44 AM

hey there, Carmina!

well, it has been a long and winding road, and an even longer time coming, but my debut CD, I Remember, is FINALLY HERE!!! YAY!!!!!

to celebrate, American HeartBeat Records(tm) has arranged a FREE DOWNLOAD of Now Is The Time in exchange for a valid email address. Now Is The Time is a brand new, upbeat song I wrote: we are living in turbulent times. suddenly it is okay to be greedy and heartless? no way! a song of hope for our future, a new vision of America and the world.

we have a bunch of exciting things planned to kick this whole thing off, and we need to get a better picture of who our friends are, so the FREE DOWNLOAD form will ask you a few questions, like, what is your country and nearest major city. it all takes maybe 15 seconds.

anyhoo, the FREE DOWNLOAD, and the FUN, begins at www.JAETCHISON.com

I look forward to getting to know you a little better, and I thank you SO VERY MUCH for your friendship and support!

please tell your friends about JAETCHISON.com, and ask them to sign up for the email list, too! FUN things are coming up!!

peace from Atlanta, Georgia, USA,

J.A. Etchison
