This is an intriguing mix of Brazilian and American jazz and pop standards - shifting between English and Portuguese - from Los Angeles-based singer, dancer, actress, voiceover artist Carol Bach-y-Rita. This debut CD has a lot going for it, including its most-musical, sensual and laid-back feel. Her interpretations of Jobim’s “Corcovado” and Johnny Mandel’s ”A Time for Love” are as cool and soothing as a pitcher of caipirinhas on a sweltering summer afternoon. Her backing quartet features bassist Trey Henry, pianist Jamieson Trotter, drummer Mike Shapiro and saxophonist/flutist Robert Kyle. The Bach-y-Rita-Henry duet version of “Don’t Explain” is exquisite. A beautiful version of “Lazy Afternoon” closes the session.

On this enticing project, Los Angeles-based vocalist Carol Bach-Y-Rita lends her warm alto to a bonanza of Brazilian-inflected music. An ace band, saxophonist and flutist Robert Kyle, pianist Jamieson Trotter, bassist Trey Henry and drummer Mike Shapiro, backs her. The timeless "You Don't Know What Love Is," poignant as ever as a bossa, offers Kyle's tender remarks after Bach-Y-Rita's telling lyric reading. The leader and Kyle revisit the bop blues, "Don't Get Scared," with King Pleasure's words over a melodic Stan Getz solo. Jobim's gem "Corcovado" is enchanting in Portuguese, with an emotive Kyle on tenor. Gilberto Gil's buoyant "Eu Vim Da Bahia" sports lightly dancing Trotter piano after an alluring vocal. Moacir Santos' "April Child" is another winner in Portuguese.

Hello! Thanks for visiting. The new CD "What Love Is", has just been released! It's available online at cdbaby.com/cd/CarolBachyRita. Check it out - great tunes (Moacir Santos, Gilberto Gil, Tom Jobim, Stan Getz, Billie Holiday, Kleber Jorge, Johnny Mandel,) WONDERFUL arrangements by Robert Kyle, and a stellar band - Trey Henry on bass, Robert Kyle on tenor and flute, Mike Shapiro on drums and Jamieson Trotter on piano I've posted a few tracks here, along with a track or two from "back in the day", and a few voiceover reels.
After laying out of the music scene for a number of years, I've taken a dive back into the pool with this recording, and with 2 beautiful working groups in LA - the band on my CD, and my "Sambalicious" group w/ Robert Kyle on Reeds and percussion, Mitchell Long on Guitar, John Leftwich on acoustic bass.
Still continuing with voiceover (which I adore) and commercial acting work, but it is great to be refocusing on music!
JAZZ, BRAZILIAN MUSIC and SALSA are my great loves. I sing mostly in English, Portuguese and Spanish. US venues include: repeat engagements with both The Monterey Jazz Festival and The San Francisco Symphony under MTT, and countless jazz venues and festivals. I've also worked and toured extensively throughout Europe and Japan.
I've been delighted to work with a number of wonderful musicians over the years, both here and abroad, including: Bill Cunliffe, Mark Levine, Rique Pantoja, Ricardo Silveira, Joshua Redman, Kleber Jorge, Michael Spiro, Michael Tilson Thomas, Harold Jones, Bill Berry, Bruce Forman, Jacky Terrason, Peter Apfelbaum, Dave Carpenter, Ricardo Del Fra, Dado Moroni, Massimo Farao, Alfred Kramer, Pietro Leveratto, The Cross Hart Experience, Edwin Livingston, Larry Steen, Albert Bover, Carlos Oliveira ...
VOICEOVER/ACTING credits include hundreds of TV and radio commercials, games, movies, and print jobs.
DANCE. I've always danced. Engagements with the San Francisco Symphony were featured roles that involved both singing and dance sequences (one staged by Patricia Birch, one by me). I've toured Europe performing Brazilian and Afro Cuban dance, and have choreographed and performed in shows at the Meridian in Paris. I teach Brazilian Samba in Los Angeles & Colorado and at the California Brazil Camp in Northern California. (http://calbrazilcamp.com/)
My last name is Catalan. I was raised mostly in Northern California (Mill Valley), with childhood years spent in Italy, Mexico and Spain. I recieved a BA in Political Economy of Industrial Societies from UC Berkely, after which I moved to Paris for 3 years to sing jazz, also performing extensively in Italy, Switzerland and Spain. After returning to San Francisco, I began a successful career in radio (KJAZ, KNBR, WILD 107, KCBS.) VoiceOver and acting work eventually led me to Los Angeles, where I currently reside.
So - full circle back to music... Let the games begin!
