About me:

Carolina Romance Writers (CRW), RWA Chapter 70, was founded in 1984 with the purpose of bringing together local published authors and future writers of romance novels, offering support, guidance, and aid in successfully landing a publishing contract and honing our craft.

CRW meets once a month in Charlotte, NC. Some meetings are hands-on workshops, others are author appearances. Every now and then publishing house editors or agents drop in for question-and-answer sessions. The goal? To get you writing!

March Online Workshops

March 2-27, 2009 Standard Workshop
Secondary Characters: The Good, The bad and the Quirky
Presented by Beth Cornelison

Secondary Characters: The Good, The Bad and The Quirky is interactive, a mix of lecture with opportunity for audience participation in discussing and interpreting the sample passages/scenes. In this workshop, we will cover the following:

1. Define what a secondary character is
2. Discuss the DOs and DON'Ts of secondary characters
3. Discuss the broad classifications/ roles of secondary characters
4. Discuss how to handle a secondary character who tries to steal a scene or book
5. Provide specific examples from the movie "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse Of The Black Pearl" and Susan Elizabeth Phillips' NOBODY'S BABY BUT MINE illustrating the effective use of these key functions, classifications and roles to enhance and further the main plot.

Georgia native, Beth Cornelison received her bachelor's degree in Public Relations from the University of Georgia. After working in public relations for more than a year, she moved with her husband to Louisiana, where she decided to pursue her love of writing fiction. Since that time, she has won numerous honors for her work including the coveted Golden Heart for unpublished authors awarded by Romance Writers of America. She made her first sale to Silhouette Intimate Moments in June 2004 and has gone on to published three more books with Silhouette. She has also had releases from Five Star Expressions and Samhain Publishing.

Beth is active as Vice President and conference coordinator for her local RWA chapter, the NOLA STARS, and has presented workshops across the country to numerous chapter meetings, conferences and book clubs. Beth lives in Louisiana with her husband, one son and three cats who think they are people.

March 2-27, 2009 Standard Workshop
POV: A No-Nonsense Guide To What You Need To Know
Presented by Lynn Kerstan
This is the class for every writer who wants to take her writing to a whole new level. In the Writer’s Toolbox, no tool is more important, flexible, or useful than Point- of-View. For this workshop, we’ll leave theory to the academics and focus on practical applications of POV for writers of popular fiction. To help the writer choose the most effective POV for a particular story or section of a story, we’ll first consider the advantages and disadvantages of first-person POV, single third person, and multiple POV. Next, we will examine “psychic distance” (levels of POV) and how to move between those levels for story and character purposes. A review of techniques for entering and establishing POV, along with a clear method for changing POV, will be provided. I’ll offer some ideas for how to capture the POV character’s “voice” and examine techniques for using POV to reveal character, bond readers to your characters, create suspense, and handle pacing. And just in case some of us have developed a few bad habits, we’ll review subtle abuses of the POV tool.

Lynn Kerstan, former college professor, folksinger, professional bridge player, and nun, is the author of nine Regency romances, seven historical romances, and three novellas. She is presently developing a paranormal series. A five-time RITA Finalist (one win), she is regularly featured on awards lists. Since Romantic Times launched its “Top Picks” feature, every Kerstan novel has been a Top Pick. Two have been selected by Library Journal for its “Best Books of the Year” list (2002 and 2003), and Dangerous Passions was named to Booklist’s Top Ten Romances of 2005 list.

For many years a teacher of English literature and writing at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and the University of San Diego, Kerstan now conducts popular fiction workshops for writers groups and conferences. An Internet junkie, she can be found online at www.StoryBroads.com., blogging with Anne Stuart, Maggie Shayne, Patricia Potter, Tara Taylor Quinn, and Suzanne Forster.

Kerstan lives an exemplary life in Coronado, California, where she plots her stories while riding her boogie board, walking on the beach, and watching Navy SEALs jog by.

Hi! Just wanted to make sure all my friends know that my new erotic horror novel THE 13TH is now in stores everywhere! I hope you'll check out this debauched and demonic horror ride!

There's even a website devoted just to the book, with an interactive map of the places and characters at www.the13th-horror.com.

Edward Lee called THE 13TH "A double-barreled shotgun blast of macabre entertainment -- an expert amalgamation of grotesquerie, eroticism, mystery, and pitch-black occult horror that no fan of the genre can miss."

And Gary A. Braunbeck said, "John Everson's The 13th is the first out-and-out horror novel in a long while to actually scare the **** out of me while reading it. It's stylish, extremely well-written, filled with richly-drawn characterizations, and boasts a labyrinthine plot worthy of Umberto Eco. Trust me -- this one will fry your nerves and break your heart."

Several people wanted me to put together something that shows the firewhip in action. So we came up with something sort of fun to test how fire would work against a green screen. Thought you might like it.

Please rate! Thanks!

Hi! Just wanted to make sure all my friends know that my 2nd horror novel SACRIFICE is now in stores everywhere, including Amazon.com! I hope you'll check out this debauched and demonic horror ride! Here are a couple reviews it's gotten so far:

“SACRIFICE is a full frontal assault on your senses. It is a dark, brutal, bloody and terribly frightening book. Everson went deep into some dark abyss to bring this book to the light of day.... I highly recommend SACRIFICE.”
—Famous Monsters of Filmland

“John Everson manages in SACRIFICE to dispense buckets of blood, provide edgy perversity, and walk the tenuous tightrope of horror and sex without falling: It’s rather an amazing feat.” –Hell Notes

cute pumpkins Pictures, Images and Photos

Five little pumpkins
Sitting on a gate.
The first one said,
"Oh, my it's getting late!"
The second one said,
"There are witches in the air!"
The third one said,
"Well, I don't care!"
The fourth one said,
"Let's run and run and run!"
The fifth one said,
"I'm ready for some fun!"
Ooooo went the wind
And out went the lights
And the five little pumpkins
Rolled out of sight.
